Bio Urns & Eco Memorials in Belgium: what to know

Water cremation for pets and water cremation for people are often regulated separately, and in Belgium one may be available where the other is not. If energy use is part of your decision, ask the pet crematoria near you what they offer rather than relying on news about human funerals. The ashes from either method work the same way in any biodegradable urn.

Prices for pet cremation in Belgium depend on your pet's weight and on whether you receive the ashes, and they vary between providers more than most people expect. Ask for every quote in writing, in local currency, and check it includes returning the ashes to you in something simple. The urn, the plant and the compost are extras to choose later.

What local attitudes to cremation mean in Belgium

About 67.98%[1] of people in Belgium are cremated, which puts it in the middle: cremation is common, but so is burial. For pets, that often means families weigh a planting urn against a whole-body burial in the yard. Both can grow a tree. The planting urn takes less space and can go almost anywhere; a whole-body grave needs more depth and distance from water, and the tree should go beside it rather than directly on top.

Source for the Belgium figure: Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes human funerals and is here as context, not as a count of pets.

Adding up the cost of a bio urn memorial in Belgium

In Ireland, one pet crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg and EUR 250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[2]. In Norway, separate cremation runs NOK 3,790 to 4,990 by weight[3]. Prices in Belgium will differ, but the pattern holds: ask for individual cremation and a simple container, then order the biodegradable urn on its own.

Germany has roughly 120 pet cemeteries, where a grave costs about EUR 150 to 250[4], and burying pets at home is banned in zones that protect water or nature[5]. That makes ashes buried under a tree at home a practical middle route in many parts of Europe. In Sweden, ashes usually take 2 to 4 weeks to come back[6], so plan the planting around that.

Where you can plant or release ashes in Belgium

What you plant can matter as much as where. Parks and nature reserves in Belgium often forbid planting anything at all, and even on private land some trees and shrubs are listed as invasive in parts of the region. A local nursery or native plant society can steer you toward a species that won't spread into wild land.

Planting a memorial in Belgium, step by step

  1. Confirm the ashes will come back. With a communal cremation there's normally nothing to collect afterwards, which leaves you with nothing to put in an urn.
  2. Pick the type of bio urn: a planting urn for a tree, a plain burial urn for a garden corner, a water urn for a lake or the sea.
  3. Ask permission before using ground you don't own, whether that's a landlord, a farmer or whoever runs the park.
  4. Plan for the weather. In Belgium, avoid frozen, baked or waterlogged ground; a calm, mild day is best for planting or a release.
  5. Release gently on water. Rest the urn on the surface, leave it to drift and go under in its own time, and scatter only a few loose petals.
  6. Come back in a year. Replace mulch, check the tree's growth and take a photo to mark the anniversary.

Keeping your pet's memory growing in Belgium

Grief doesn't end on planting day, and sometimes the quiet afterwards is the hardest part. Free pet-loss lines exist in several countries, including the Cornell Pet Loss Support Hotline in the US, run by veterinary students trained by grief counselors. Talking about your pet while you water the tree, or with someone on the phone, is part of remembering well.

Questions people ask

When should I plant a memorial tree in Belgium?

Plant in the mildest part of your local year, when the ground isn't frozen, baked dry or waterlogged. In cold areas that usually means spring after the thaw or early autumn; in hot areas, the cooler months. Ashes can wait safely at home, so choose the season that suits the tree.

Which trees make a good pet memorial in Belgium?

Choose a native tree or shrub that already grows well near you and fits the space in twenty years. Species that tolerate slightly alkaline soil cope best with ashes. A local nursery or extension service can suggest a few, and the tree finder tool on this site sorts options by mature size, light and climate.

When will I get my pet's ashes back in Belgium?

Our estimate from published return times is a conservative window of 3 to 14 days, with express services sooner and a few providers taking up to four weeks[11]. Ask your provider for their usual time. There's no rush to plant, so the return date matters less than choosing the right season for the tree.

Do I need a permit to plant pet ashes in my own garden in Belgium?

Generally not. Ashes don't carry the health concerns that rules for burying a whole body address. Keep plantings away from wells, streams and vegetable beds, check any homeowners' association or tenancy rules, and remember that a tree in the ground stays with the property if you sell.

Can I release pet ashes at sea off Belgium?

Coastal and inland waters are managed by different authorities, and many rules were written for human ashes. In general, choose a quiet spot away from swimmers and anglers, use a water-soluble urn or loose ashes only, and let nothing plastic float away. Check with the relevant authority before you go.

Where can I get a bio urn in Belgium?

Most bio urns are ordered online and ship across Belgium, and some pet crematories stock a biodegradable option. The more important purchase is local: a young native tree from a nursery that knows your climate. If you tell us where you are, we'll email options for urns, crematories and, where it's offered, water cremation.
