Using the planner

How to build your budget, line by line

  1. Choose a currency. Starting amounts are US figures; if you pick pounds, Canadian or Australian dollars, replace them with local quotes.
  2. Tick what you're planning. Private cremation and an urn start ticked. For a living memorial, untick the standard urn and tick Memorial tree or bio urn instead.
  3. Adjust the low and high amounts. When a provider quotes you a figure, type it into both boxes.
  4. Read the total. You'll see a low-to-high range and the number of items included. Copy the plan into an email or print it for the family.

Nothing you enter leaves your browser. If you'd rather a person helped with the figures, send us your plan and we'll reply with local prices.

The starting figures

Where the starting amounts come from

Three lines use published US averages from a national cost study. The private cremation line uses the published range around a US average of $260[2]. Euthanasia at a clinic averages $139[3] and at home $410[4]. These are dog figures, so a cat or rabbit will usually cost less.

$260[2]

CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for private dog cremation at $260 (range $206-$473).

$139[3]

CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for in-clinic dog euthanasia at $139 (range $110-$253).

$410[4]

CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for at-home dog euthanasia at $410 (range $325-$747).

The rest start from broad placeholder ranges, labelled "typical" in the tool, that aren't drawn from a published source, so treat them as blanks to fill in. For reference, the Bios Urn for pets costs $99[5], The Living Urn's planting system $119[6] without a tree, and, by our estimate from three US sellers, engraved garden stones start at about $39[7]. One industry report says personalized urns in general run USD 50–1,000+[8], so check your own choices.

Worked example

Budgeting a tree memorial for a 50 lb dog

A family plan private cremation for their 50 lb dog, a tree planting urn in the backyard and a small engraved stone beside it. They don't need a display urn, so they untick it.

Example tree memorial budget using published prices
ItemLowHigh
Private cremation$206[2]$473
Tree planting urn$99[5]$119[6]
Engraved garden stone$38[9]$115
Total$343$707

That's a wide range, and it narrows quickly once real quotes come in. Compost, pine bark and a pH test kit add a few dollars more; the family simply raise the high figure on the tree line to cover them. If they wanted a planting day with friends, ticking Farewell or service and setting it to $0 to $50 for flowers and refreshments keeps the plan honest.

A simple stone is often the single biggest variable in a living memorial budget.

A second example

Budgeting a water release or container memorial instead

Not every living memorial needs a yard. For a lake or sea release, keep the cremation line, tick Memorial tree or bio urn and set it to the price of a water-soluble urn, then add a small amount under Farewell or service for petals or a boat trip if you need one. There's no stone to buy, so the total often comes in lower than a tree memorial. Check the local rules first; our guide to releasing pet ashes on a lake or at sea covers who to ask.

For a balcony container, budget for the pot itself as well as the plant. A large frost-proof planter can cost as much as the sapling, and potting compost for a 20-gallon container runs to several bags. If water cremation is available near you, compare its price in the aftercare options comparison before you settle the cremation line.

If you're spreading costs over time, the living memorial timeline shows which pieces you need straight away and which can wait until planting season, often several months later.

Keeping costs down

Where a living memorial can cost less, and where it can't

The cremation is usually the largest line, and it's the one people compare least. In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority found that only 52%[10] of cremation buyers remembered being told the price and package options. Asking for a written total, and whether water cremation is available at a similar price, is the quickest way to save.

  • Buy a small bare-root native tree in the dormant season. It often costs less than a potted tree and settles in well. The Arbor Day Foundation's planting pages show how to handle bare roots on the day.
  • Skip a decorative temporary urn. Ashes come back in a simple container that's fine to keep until planting day.
  • Use natural stone from a garden center or your own land as a marker, with a name painted or carved by hand.
  • Don't skimp on soil. A few bags of compost are cheap insurance for a tree you hope to keep for decades.

The fine print

What the budget can't account for

The planner doesn't know your local prices, delivery fees, sales tax, or whether a provider bundles items together. It can't tell you whether a particular tree kit is good value or whether the stone you like will arrive in time. And a lower total is not always the better plan: a slightly larger sapling or an extra bag of compost can be the difference between a memorial that thrives and one you replace. Our location pages give climate notes that affect what you'll buy, and the poll results show what other readers expect to spend on.

Before you order anything, read the bio urn buying checklist, and check the urn size calculator so the planting urn you've budgeted for can actually hold your pet's ashes.

What next

From a budget to a booked plan

Once the total feels right, choose the pieces. The memorial tree finder suggests species for your climate, and the stone planner checks how much wording fits.

Questions people ask

How much does a bio urn memorial cost in total?

For a dog in the US, a private cremation (averaging $260[2] nationally), a tree planting urn such as the $99 Bios Urn[5] and an engraved garden stone from about $39[7] come to roughly $400 before pickup or planting costs, with the cremation price doing most of the moving. Cats and small pets usually cost less. Local quotes can move this a lot.

Is a bio urn cheaper than a regular urn?

Often, yes. Planting and water urns are usually at the lower end of urn prices, while carved wood, ceramic or metal display urns can cost several hundred dollars. The saving can go toward a better sapling or soil.

Does pet insurance cover a memorial?

Many standard pet insurance policies don't cover cremation or memorial items, though some policies and add-ons reimburse part of the cost. Check your policy wording, or ask your insurer directly before you assume either way.

Can I use the planner outside the US?

Yes. Choose your currency and replace the starting amounts with local quotes. The default figures are US prices, so they won't match costs in the UK, Canada or Australia, but the structure of the budget is the same.
