Bio Urns & Eco Memorials in Brazil: what to know
Water cremation for pets and water cremation for people are often regulated separately, and in Brazil one may be available where the other is not. If energy use is part of your decision, ask the pet crematoria near you what they offer rather than relying on news about human funerals. The ashes from either method work the same way in any biodegradable urn.
If you're ordering a bio urn from abroad into Brazil, check the biosecurity rules first. Many countries restrict imported seeds, soil and live plants, and an urn packed with a seed capsule can be delayed or destroyed at the border. Ordering the urn without its seed and buying a locally grown sapling sidesteps the problem, and the sapling is more likely to thrive.

The local attitude to ashes and memorials
Cremation of people is still the minority choice in Brazil, at about 9%[1]. That can make it harder to find someone local who knows about bio urns or water cremation. You don't need a specialist, though. A general pet crematory, a plain container, a nursery sapling and a bag of compost are enough for a planted memorial that grows well.
Exame, citing Sincep (2024) publishes the Brazil rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
What a greener goodbye costs in Brazil
By our estimate, across eight markets we studied, private cremation with ashes returned costs about twice as much as communal at the median[2]. That premium is what makes a planting possible, so it's worth paying when a tree or pot in Brazil is what you have in mind. A bio urn itself is a smaller cost: US guides put biodegradable urns at around $70–$260[3].
Across the countries we've studied, private cremation for a medium-size dog has a median published price of about $294 in US dollars[4]. A bio urn adds less than that: one US retailer lists them at around $15–$80[5]. In Brazil, confirm individual cremation first, then choose the urn and the place, and ask for every price in writing and in local currency.
| Item | Price | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Private cremation, pet up to 30 kg | AED 2,300 to 2,700[6] | UAE |
| Biodegradable pet urn | $15–$80[5] | US price guide |
| Water urn for release | $149[7] | US maker |
| Private aquamation by weight | $150–$450[8] | US provider |

Who to ask before you plant or scatter in Brazil
What you plant can matter as much as where. Parks and nature reserves in Brazil often forbid planting anything at all, and even on private land some trees and shrubs are listed as invasive in parts of the region. A local nursery or native plant society can steer you toward a species that won't spread into wild land.
From ashes to a growing tree: the steps
- If your pet dies while you're away from Brazil, have a vet close to where you are set up individual cremation locally. Transporting a body a long way home almost never works out.
- Ask how the ashes can reach you: collected in person, posted by a tracked courier service, or sent to your own vet.
- Flying home with the ashes? Carry them in your hand luggage in a container that can be X-rayed, with the crematory's certificate in the same bag.
- Don't buy the bio urn on the road. Hold off until you're back and have settled on a location, then choose an urn that suits it.
- Plant somewhere that links both places if you like: a tree from the region where your pet died, or one from your own garden, if it suits the climate in Brazil.
- Write down the date and place where your pet died and where it was cremated. Those details fade faster than you'd expect.
Keeping the memorial alive in Brazil
Take cuttings. If your memorial is a shrub like rosemary, lavender, willow or a flowering currant, cuttings root easily, and you can grow a small piece of the original plant wherever you live next. It's a simple way to keep a living memorial even after a move, and a lovely thing to share with family.

Questions people ask
Do I need a permit to plant pet ashes in my own garden in Brazil?
Generally not. Ashes don't carry the health concerns that rules for burying a whole body address. Keep plantings away from wells, streams and vegetable beds, check any homeowners' association or tenancy rules, and remember that a tree in the ground stays with the property if you sell.
Can I plant a memorial if I rent in Brazil?
Yes. A large pot with a dwarf tree or shrub moves with you, and only a small share of the ashes should go in it. You could also plant at a relative's home, or choose a water release. If you'd like to plant in a rented garden, ask your landlord in writing first.
Can a pet's ashes be buried with a person's ashes in Brazil?
It depends on the cemetery or burial ground. Many human cemeteries don't accept animal remains, though some allow a pet's ashes to be placed in an owner's grave or plot. On your own land, combining ashes in one planting is generally a private decision. Ask the cemetery directly and get their answer in writing.
Can I scatter pet ashes on public land in Brazil?
Often only with permission. Parks, forests, beaches and waterways are each managed by an authority with its own policy, and some prohibit scattering entirely. Contact the land manager, explain that it's a small amount of pet ash, and ask whether there's a preferred spot. Private land always needs the owner's consent.
When should I plant a memorial tree in Brazil?
Plant in the mildest part of your local year, when the ground isn't frozen, baked dry or waterlogged. In cold areas that usually means spring after the thaw or early autumn; in hot areas, the cooler months. Ashes can wait safely at home, so choose the season that suits the tree.
Is pet aquamation available in Brazil?
In some places, most often in and around larger cities. Pet providers have adopted water cremation faster than human funeral homes, but availability depends on whether a provider near you has the equipment. Ask local pet crematories directly, or tell us your town and we'll check which providers serve it.
