Bio Urns & Eco Memorials in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes: what to know
Most families in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes who choose a living memorial do it in two stages: cremation first, arranged through the vet or directly with a crematory, and the planting or water release weeks or months later. That gap is useful. It gives you time to choose the right tree, wait for the right season and prepare the soil so the memorial actually grows.
Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes holds very different kinds of home, from apartments in Lyon and Grenoble to farms and large rural lots, and the right memorial follows the home. City dwellers tend to choose a container, planting at a parent's or friend's house, or the water; people with land can plant a tree in the ground. Each of our 2 local pages starts from the size of the place and works from there.

Cremation, burial and green choices in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes
About 44.91%[1] of people in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes are cremated, well below the rate in many other places. Burial traditions run deep here, and many families still bury pets whole in the yard. If you'd like a living memorial, you have two routes: a whole-body burial with a tree planted beside the grave, or cremation followed by a planting urn. The second takes far less digging and avoids most concerns about wells and water.
That Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes rate is a human statistic published by ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
What bio urns and aquamation cost in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes
In France, a 20 kg dog costs about €70 to €120 for collective cremation and €150 to €250 for individual[2], while Dutch averages are about €200 and €300[3]. Those prices usually include a basic container. If you'd like a planting urn in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, ask for the ashes in a plain container and buy the bio urn separately, sized for the amount of ash you'll receive.
Water cremation is new in Europe. The first facility for people opened in Ireland in 2023[4], and Norway changed its law in 2022 so funeral homes can apply to offer it[5]. For pets, availability near Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes is limited, so most families use a flame cremation and a biodegradable urn afterwards. Ask local crematoria directly whether they offer it.
| Country | Collective (no ashes back) | Individual (ashes back) |

Who to ask before you plant or scatter in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes
Natural burial grounds and some pet cemeteries in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes accept ashes in biodegradable urns, and a few ask for nothing else: no plastic, no metal, no varnish. If you're considering one, ask what the urn may be made of, whether a tree or marker is allowed above it, and whether the fee includes looking after the plot.
In France, individual pet cremation typically costs €150 to €250 for a 20 kg dog[2], and the ashes can be kept, buried on your own land or scattered in nature with care. Pet water cremation is rare. Much of France has chalky, alkaline soil, so if you plant ashes, choose a lime-tolerant tree and be generous with compost.
From ashes to a growing tree: the steps
- If you find your pet has died at home, move them gently onto a towel or blanket in the coolest room you have, and call your vet or a pet crematory. Many will collect or tell you where to bring them.
- Say you want individual cremation, then mention that the ashes are going into a bio urn. Saying so up front keeps the provider from offering a communal service where nothing comes back.
- Keep the collar, a tag and a little fur before your pet leaves the house. These can go into the planting later, or into a small keepsake box.
- Leave the memorial decisions for another week. Nobody should have to settle on a species and a spot on the evening their pet died.
- When the ashes arrive, open the box once to see how much there is and how the inner bag is sealed, then put the lid back and keep it somewhere dry.
- Use our [memorial tree finder](/tools/memorial-tree-finder) once you feel ready, and plan the planting for a calm weekend in the right season.
Ways to mark the spot and the date
A memorial doesn't have to be private. Some people in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes donate a tree or a planting day to a local shelter, rescue or community garden in their pet's name, without any ashes involved. It gives the memory a public, living form and helps other animals at the same time.

Questions people ask
Can a pet's ashes be buried with a person's ashes in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes?
It depends on the cemetery or burial ground. Many human cemeteries don't accept animal remains, though some allow a pet's ashes to be placed in an owner's grave or plot. On your own land, combining ashes in one planting is generally a private decision. Ask the cemetery directly and get their answer in writing.
What if my soil in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes is chalky or alkaline?
Ashes will make it more so. Mix them with extra compost or composted bark, choose a lime-tolerant tree or shrub, and test the pH before planting. On very chalky ground, a raised bed or large container with bought-in soil gives you more control.
Which trees make a good pet memorial in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes?
Choose a native tree or shrub that already grows well near you and fits the space in twenty years. Species that tolerate slightly alkaline soil cope best with ashes. A local nursery or extension service can suggest a few, and the tree finder tool on this site sorts options by mature size, light and climate.
How many communities do you cover in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes?
We have local living-memorial guides for 2 communities in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, including Lyon and Grenoble. Each covers local weather and planting seasons, soil advice, prices for bio urns and aquamation where we have sourced figures, and general notes on scattering and water releases.
Can I release pet ashes at sea off Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes?
Coastal and inland waters are managed by different authorities, and many rules were written for human ashes. In general, choose a quiet spot away from swimmers and anglers, use a water-soluble urn or loose ashes only, and let nothing plastic float away. Check with the relevant authority before you go.
When will I get my pet's ashes back in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes?
Our estimate from published return times is a conservative window of 3 to 14 days, with express services sooner and a few providers taking up to four weeks[8]. Ask your provider for their usual time. There's no rush to plant, so the return date matters less than choosing the right season for the tree.
