Growing something from the goodbye in Bremen

Bremen, Germany

Where a living memorial fits in Bremen

Pet cemeteries in and around Bremen give families somewhere to visit, much like the family grave many northern Germans still tend on Sundays and at Totensonntag in November. An urn plot is usually simpler than a full grave. Others would rather keep ashes at home, divide them among relatives in small keepsakes, or wear a trace in a pendant. If a plot appeals, ask how long it is held and what yearly fees apply.

Bremen's Hanseatic tradition values solid, well-made things, and many families here choose a memorial that will last: a quality ceramic urn, a stone with carefully cut lettering, a piece of silver jewelry. If you are commissioning something, allow a few weeks, and keep the ashes in their return container meanwhile. Bremen's merchants were known for doing things properly rather than showily, and that spirit suits a quiet, well-crafted memorial.

Apartment life in Bremen makes the soil question more important, not less. In a pot there's nowhere for the salts in ashes to drain away to, so only a small share of the ashes should go into a container, well mixed with compost, and the rest can be kept, scattered or planted elsewhere later. A spoonful mixed into a lavender or rosemary pot on the windowsill is a real, living memorial, and it avoids the problems of a large ash load in a small root space.

A pet at home in Bremen

Cremation, burial and green choices in Germany

About 76.0%[1] of people in Germany are cremated, so ashes are part of everyday life here in a way they aren't everywhere. Many families have already scattered or planted a grandparent's ashes and know how it felt. If you did, you'll recognise much of the process for a pet, with one difference worth knowing: a pet's ashes are a much smaller amount, which makes mixing them safely into soil far easier.

Source for the Germany number: Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for Bremen, so the human figure is the best local signal available.

Choosing the right month to plant in Bremen

We don't have detailed weather data for Bremen, so use a simple rule: plant a memorial tree in the mildest part of your year, when the ground isn't frozen, baked or waterlogged. A local nursery will know when that is. Ashes can wait safely at home, so there's no need to plant in the wrong season.

Eco memorial prices, from urn to tree

Across Europe, pet cremation is priced by weight and bio urns are usually bought separately. In Germany, collective cremation is listed at about €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[5]. Only individual cremation returns your own pet's ashes, so choose it if you plan to plant. The table shows published European cremation prices; bio urns sold online are usually a modest extra.

The full price table by product is on our Germany page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

What Germany allows for ashes, in general terms

Rules change more often than most people realise, and many local policies about ashes were never written down at all. Treat any general guide for Germany, including ours, as a starting point. Whoever looks after that particular field, park or shoreline is the one whose answer counts, so it's worth getting it by email where you can.

Germany has strict rules for human ashes, which usually must go to a cemetery, but pet ashes are treated more flexibly and can generally be kept or buried on your own land. Whole-body pet burial needs at least 50 cm of soil and isn't allowed in water or nature protection areas[7]. A planting urn in your own garden avoids most of those questions.

From ashes to a growing tree: the steps

  1. If you find your pet has died at home, lift them carefully onto a blanket or towel and lay them in the coolest part of the house, then phone the vet or a nearby pet crematory. Most can either pick them up or point you to a drop-off place.
  2. Say you want individual cremation and that you plan to plant the ashes. That one sentence steers the provider away from communal options that return nothing.
  3. Keep the collar, a tag and a little fur before your pet leaves the house. These can go into the planting later, or into a small keepsake box.
  4. Leave the memorial decisions for another week. Nobody should have to settle on a species and a spot on the evening their pet died.
  5. When the ashes arrive, open the box once to see the amount and the inner bag, then close it and store it somewhere dry.
  6. Use our [memorial tree finder](/tools/memorial-tree-finder) once you feel ready, and plan the planting for a calm weekend in the right season.

Remembering your pet in Bremen

Bremen's brick terraces come with narrow back gardens, and a memorial there tends to be understated: a small engraved stone among the hydrangeas, a tree urn, a weathered wooden marker. Indoors, the choice is usually between a compact urn on the windowsill, a framed paw print or a piece of jewelry holding a trace of ash. For anything outdoors, choose materials that can take damp, windy North Sea winters.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Germany?

For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Bremen follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bremen?

Usually yes. Hamburg is about 59 miles away, Hanover is about 62 miles away and Munster is about 92 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Can I put two pets' ashes in the same bio urn?

Yes, if the urn is big enough and everyone agrees, because once the ashes are mixed they can't be separated. Check the combined amount first: cremated remains weigh about 3-5% of body weight[8], so two large dogs may be too much for a single planting urn. Many families plant two urns close together instead, or set aside a pinch of each animal's ashes in a locket or small jar.

Is pet aquamation available in Bremen?

Quite possibly. Large cities are where pet water cremation is most often offered, because the equipment is a big investment and providers set up where demand is highest. Ask local pet crematories directly, or tell us you're in Bremen and we'll let you know which providers serve the area. Ashes from aquamation work in any bio urn.

How long does a water-soluble urn take to dissolve?

Most are made from salt, sand, paper or gelatin and dissolve within minutes to hours once they sink. Some float briefly first, long enough for a few words: one maker's water urn floats for several minutes before dissolving[9]. Calm water gives the best result, so check the forecast for wind before you go.

Can I scatter my pet's ashes in a park in Bremen?

Usually only with permission, and some parks don't allow it at all. Parks are managed by a city, county, state or national agency, each with its own policy, and many were written for human ashes. Contact the park office, explain it's a small amount of pet ash, and ask whether there's a preferred spot.
