Frankfurt, Hesse

Bio urns, trees and water in Frankfurt

Germany has a long tradition of pet cemeteries, and several serve the Rhine-Main area, which appeals to families who want a grave to visit with flowers on the anniversary. Others keep the urn at home and light a candle on the day. Both are common in Hesse, and there is no need to decide immediately; ashes can be kept safely until you are ready.

Frankfurt apartments suit memorials that sit comfortably on a shelf or windowsill. German workshops make plain urns in oak, ceramic and slate, as well as small keepsake pendants and engraved stones, and many offer laser engraving of the name and dates. Urn sizes vary a great deal with the size of the animal, so ask your provider how much ash to expect before ordering anything online.

A big city like Frankfurt has one advantage for a living memorial: choice. Several nurseries, extension offices or master gardener programs are usually within reach, and staff can tell you which trees handle local heat, cold and soil without being babied. Take that advice seriously. A native species bought as a two-year-old sapling will almost always outlive the seed that came with an online planting kit, and it will look like a tree far sooner.

Frankfurt's population is around 764,000, the largest of the 2 Hesse communities we cover.

The closest communities we cover are Wiesbaden (20 miles), Mainz (21 miles) and Mannheim (44 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Frankfurt too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

A pet at home in Frankfurt

Why cremation culture in Germany shapes your options

Cremation accounts for roughly 76.0%[1] of human deaths in Germany, and a lot of those ashes end up waiting on a shelf. That's true of pets as well. If you already have an urn at home from an earlier pet, a bio urn can be a way to finish that story: the older ashes and the new can go into one planting, or two trees side by side, whenever you feel ready.

Source for the Germany number: Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for Frankfurt, so the human figure is the best local signal available.

Weather, soil and planting windows in Frankfurt

We don't have detailed weather data for Frankfurt, so use a simple rule: plant a memorial tree in the mildest part of your year, when the ground isn't frozen, baked or waterlogged. A local nursery will know when that is. Ashes can wait safely at home, so there's no need to plant in the wrong season.

Adding up the cost of a bio urn memorial in Frankfurt

Across Europe, pet cremation is priced by weight and bio urns are usually bought separately. In Germany, collective cremation is listed at about €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[5]. Only individual cremation returns your own pet's ashes, so choose it if you plan to plant. The table shows published European cremation prices; bio urns sold online are usually a modest extra.

The full price table by product is on our Hesse page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Who to ask before you plant or scatter in Hesse

Burying ashes, scattering them loose and releasing them on water are often treated as three different things. In Hesse, a place that welcomes a scattering may forbid digging, and a lake that allows a release may not allow a gathering on the shore. When you ask permission, say exactly which one you have in mind.

Germany has strict rules for human ashes, which usually must go to a cemetery, but pet ashes are treated more flexibly and can generally be kept or buried on your own land. Whole-body pet burial needs at least 50 cm of soil and isn't allowed in water or nature protection areas[7]. A planting urn in your own garden avoids most of those questions.

What to do first, and what can wait for the right season

  1. If you're remembering more than one animal, settle at the start on one shared planting or separate ones. Either works, but once the ashes are combined there's no undoing it.
  2. Label each container clearly with the name and date as it comes back, especially if the ashes return months or years apart.
  3. Choose a bigger planting area for several sets of ashes: a hedge, a group of shrubs or a small orchard spreads the mineral load across more soil.
  4. Keep a spoonful of each in its own keepsake, so a family member who was closest to one particular pet has something just for them.
  5. Plan for the pets still living with you. A new planting that smells of bone attracts diggers, so protect it for the first few months.
  6. Add a marker for each name, or one stone that lists them all, so visitors know who the planting is for.

Keeping the memorial alive in Frankfurt

The Stadtwald south of the Main and the riverside paths along both banks are familiar ground for many Frankfurt pet owners. Scattering ashes in city woods or parks is generally not something you can simply do in Germany, so look into it first. A biodegradable urn under a young tree on family property in the Taunus or Odenwald, or a memorial stone in a private garden, can give you a place to return to.

Questions people ask

How do Germany attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Germany human cremation rate at about 76.0%[1]. We show it on the Frankfurt page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Frankfurt?

Usually yes. Wiesbaden is about 20 miles away, Mainz is about 21 miles away and Mannheim is about 44 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Can I take my pet's ashes on a plane to plant them somewhere else?

Usually, yes. Most airlines let you carry cremated remains in hand luggage, but security staff need to be able to X-ray the container, so a wooden, plastic or cardboard container is easier than a metal urn. Keep the certificate from the crematory with you. Leave any seed pod at home if you're crossing a border that restricts plant material.

Is it legal to release pet ashes in the sea or a river?

Rules differ by place and by who manages the water, and many were written for human remains. In general, avoid drinking-water reservoirs, busy swimming areas and places where anglers gather, use a water-soluble urn or loose ashes only, and let nothing plastic float away. Ask the relevant agency or landowner before the day.

How much ash will my pet leave, and will it fit a bio urn?

Cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[8], so a cat returns a few ounces and a large dog several pounds. Many planting kits are designed for a set volume, and a big dog's ashes may not all fit. Use our urn size calculator, and plan to mix any extra into the wider planting bed or keep it for a second memorial.

Is pet aquamation available in Frankfurt?

Quite possibly. Large cities are where pet water cremation is most often offered, because the equipment is a big investment and providers set up where demand is highest. Ask local pet crematories directly, or tell us you're in Frankfurt and we'll let you know which providers serve the area. Ashes from aquamation work in any bio urn.
