What local attitudes to cremation mean in Germany
Because cremation is the norm in Germany, at roughly 76.0%[1] of deaths, green ideas about ashes are easy to raise without raised eyebrows. In the US, 68%[5] of people in NFDA's 2024 consumer survey expressed interest in green funeral or natural burial options. If you'd like the lower-impact route for a pet, start with the cremation method, then choose an urn that breaks down and a native plant.

Where you can plant or release ashes in North Rhine-Westphalia
Rules about ashes were mostly written for people, and pet ashes often sit in a grey area. That's a reason to ask, not a reason to assume. On land you own, planting or burying ashes is generally fine. Anywhere else in North Rhine-Westphalia, from parks to beaches to a friend's field, the land manager or owner decides, so ask first.
Germany has strict rules for human ashes, which usually must go to a cemetery, but pet ashes are treated more flexibly and can generally be kept or buried on your own land. Whole-body pet burial needs at least 50 cm of soil and isn't allowed in water or nature protection areas[9]. A planting urn in your own garden avoids most of those questions.
Planting a memorial in Dortmund, step by step
- If euthanasia is planned, find out from the practice beforehand which crematory handles their aftercare and whether aquamation is available through them.
- Book the aftercare before the appointment, which leaves the day free for nothing but sitting with your pet.
- Ask for a paw print or nose print before cremation if you'd like one. It can't be made afterwards.
- Choose the plant in advance if that helps you. Some families find it comforting to know exactly where their pet will rest.
- Skip the display urn. A simple box or tube from the crematory is all a planting needs, and the saving can go toward the tree or shrub.
- Prepare the soil blend while you wait for the ashes, so the planting can follow within a season rather than drifting on for years.

Why does the Dortmund page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 76.0%[1] of Germany residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Dortmund?
The closest communities we cover are Essen (about 20 miles), Munster (about 32 miles) and Dusseldorf (about 36 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Dortmund too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How much ash will my pet leave, and will it fit a bio urn?
Cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[10], so a cat returns a few ounces and a large dog several pounds. Many planting kits are designed for a set volume, and a big dog's ashes may not all fit. Can I bring a bio urn with seeds into my country?
Check before you order. Many countries restrict imported seeds and plant material, and a tree urn that ships with a seed capsule may be held or destroyed at the border. The simple fix is to buy an urn without the seed and plant a young tree from a nursery near Dortmund, which grows more reliably anyway.
What if the soil in Dortmund is already alkaline?
Then ashes push it further, so be generous with compost and composted bark, choose a lime-tolerant tree or shrub, and test the pH before planting. Chalky and limestone soils are common in many regions. Plants that dislike lime, such as azaleas and blueberries, are a poor choice for an ash planting anywhere.
Is water cremation for pets available in Europe?
It's still rare. Ireland opened Europe's first human water cremation service in 2023[6], and Norway has since opened a route for funeral homes to seek approval[7].
