Catania, Sicily
Planning a greener goodbye in Catania
Catania is built from Etna's dark lava stone, from the paving in the streets to the baroque churches, and some families like a memorial that echoes that: a small plaque or stone in basalt for a balcony or garden. Others prefer ceramic, which Sicily is known for, whether a hand-painted urn or a tile with a name. Whatever you choose, think about whether it will sit indoors or face the strong summer sun.
Remembrance is part of family life in Sicily, from visits to the cemetery on the Day of the Dead in November to the devotion the city shows Saint Agatha each February. Many families bring that instinct home for their pets, with a photo, a candle and a small urn in a quiet corner. A tree or plant grown with a bio urn in a garden or large pot is another way to keep a living memorial.
Catania is big enough to have a real mix of homeowners and renters, and the right memorial differs between the two. Owners can plant in the ground, though soil tests and utility checks still apply. Renters need the landlord's written permission to plant in a rented yard, and most people who rent choose a pot, a relative's garden or a water release instead. Neither is a lesser memorial; it's just matching the memorial to your life.
Catania's population is around 311,000, the 2nd-largest of the 2 Sicily communities we cover.
Our pages for Palermo (103 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Catania as well.

The local attitude to ashes and memorials
Burial still dominates in Italy, where the human cremation rate is about 38.16%[1], and for many families burying a pet whole feels natural. If you'd like a greener version of that, a shroud or basket made of natural fiber and a tree nearby is one way. If you'd rather cremate, a planting urn gives you a smaller, simpler burial. Either way, check local rules on burying animals before you dig.
The Italy percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Catania, not as a count of pets.
Choosing the right month to plant in Catania
Whatever Catania's weather, the soil step is the same. Mix the ashes through a generous amount of compost and soil, let the mix rest if you can, and test the pH before planting. Hot, dry places need more dilution and deeper watering; cold places may need to wait for thawed ground. A local gardener can tell you which applies.

Eco memorial prices, from urn to tree
Water cremation is new in Europe. The first facility for people opened in Ireland in 2023[5], and Norway changed its law in 2022 so funeral homes can apply to offer it[6]. For pets, availability near Catania is limited, so most families use a flame cremation and a biodegradable urn afterwards. Ask local crematoria directly whether they offer it.

Scattering and planting rules in Sicily
Rules about ashes were mostly written for people, and pet ashes often sit in a grey area. That's a reason to ask, not a reason to assume. On land you own, planting or burying ashes is generally fine. Anywhere else in Sicily, from parks to beaches to a friend's field, the land manager or owner decides, so ask first.
What to do first, and what can wait for the right season
- Talk it through with your household before deciding anything, since someone may quietly prefer the ashes to stay indoors.
- Measure your space. A tree needs room to grow; a shrub, a pot or a flower bed may suit your garden better.
- Test the soil at the planting site. Ground that already reads alkaline calls for a species that tolerates lime, plus more compost or composted bark than usual.
- Spread the ashes through a wide planting area, not in one band directly beneath the root ball.
- Water well for two summers. Most memorial trees that fail do so in their first dry season, not their first winter.
- Keep a record of the species, the date and what went into the soil, so you can care for it or move a cutting later.
Ways to mark the spot and the date
Space is limited in most Catania apartments, so compact memorials tend to suit best: a small urn on a shelf, a pendant or ring holding a pinch of ashes, or a framed paw print. If you'd like both, ask for the ashes to be divided before you order, so a keepsake portion can be set aside. Pieces kept on a sunny balcony should be UV-resistant so colors and engraving last.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Italy?
For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Catania follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Is there water cremation for pets near Catania?
It depends on whether a provider nearby has invested in the equipment. Smaller places rarely have their own, but some aquamation providers in larger centres such as Catania collect from vets across a wide area. Ask your vet whether they work with one. If not, a flame cremation followed by a bio urn still gives you a living memorial.
How long does a water-soluble urn take to dissolve?
Most are made from salt, sand, paper or gelatin and dissolve within minutes to hours once they sink. Some float briefly first, long enough for a few words: one maker's water urn floats for several minutes before dissolving[8]. Calm water gives the best result, so check the forecast for wind before you go.
How much ash will my pet leave, and will it fit a bio urn?
Cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[9], so a cat returns a few ounces and a large dog several pounds. Many planting kits are designed for a set volume, and a big dog's ashes may not all fit. Use our urn size calculator, and plan to mix any extra into the wider planting bed or keep it for a second memorial.
Do bio urns work with ashes from flame cremation?
Yes. A bio urn works with ashes from flame cremation or water cremation. Both leave mineral-rich, alkaline ash, so the soil advice is the same either way: dilute the ashes well through compost and soil, let the mix rest if you can, and test the pH before a young tree goes in.
Can I scatter my pet's ashes in a park in Catania?
Usually only with permission, and some parks don't allow it at all. Parks are managed by a city, county, state or national agency, each with its own policy, and many were written for human ashes. Contact the park office, explain it's a small amount of pet ash, and ask whether there's a preferred spot.
