Bio urns, trees and water in Florence
Florence has centuries of craftsmanship, from the goldsmiths of the Ponte Vecchio to marble from nearby Carrara and terracotta from Impruneta. Many families choose a memorial with that same care: a piece of jewellery holding a few ashes, a small marble or stone urn, a terracotta planter, or a paw print impression. Handmade pieces often feel more personal than mass-produced ones.
The hills around Florence, from Fiesole to the vineyards toward Chianti, are places many families connect with Sunday outings. Scattering ashes in the countryside is a personal choice, but rules vary by comune and landowners must agree, so check first. Many Florentine families keep some ashes at home in a small urn or pendant even after scattering, so that there is always something to hold.
Suburban yards around Florence often hide sprinkler lines, cables and gas pipes just below the grass. Before you dig a wide planting hole, use the free call-before-you-dig service where you live, and check where any irrigation runs. A tree planted over a sprinkler line will eventually find it. Marking the spot a week before the ceremony avoids a last-minute scramble.
Florence's population is around 382,000, the largest of the 2 Tuscany communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Bologna, about 50 miles (81 km) away, which is where some providers serving Florence are based.
The closest communities we cover are Siena (31 miles), Bologna (50 miles) and Portofino (108 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Florence too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

What local attitudes to cremation mean in Italy
Burial still dominates in Italy, where the human cremation rate is about 38.16%[1], and for many families burying a pet whole feels natural. If you'd like a greener version of that, a shroud or basket made of natural fiber and a tree nearby is one way. If you'd rather cremate, a planting urn gives you a smaller, simpler burial. Either way, check local rules on burying animals before you dig.
For the Italy figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Florence rather than as pet data.
Seasons, soil and weather for a memorial in Florence
Whatever Florence's weather, the soil step is the same. Mix the ashes through a generous amount of compost and soil, let the mix rest if you can, and test the pH before planting. Hot, dry places need more dilution and deeper watering; cold places may need to wait for thawed ground. A local gardener can tell you which applies.

What a greener goodbye costs in Florence
Water cremation is new in Europe. The first facility for people opened in Ireland in 2023[5], and Norway changed its law in 2022 so funeral homes can apply to offer it[6]. For pets, availability near Florence is limited, so most families use a flame cremation and a biodegradable urn afterwards. Ask local crematoria directly whether they offer it.

Scattering and planting rules in Tuscany
Burying ashes, scattering them loose and releasing them on water are often treated as three different things. In Tuscany, a place that welcomes a scattering may forbid digging, and a lake that allows a release may not allow a gathering on the shore. When you ask permission, say exactly which one you have in mind.
From ashes to a growing tree: the steps
- Confirm the ashes will come back. Communal cremation usually means no ashes are returned, and you can't plant what you don't receive.
- Pick the type of bio urn: one that grows a tree, a simple biodegradable urn to bury in a quiet bed, or a floating urn meant for a lake, river or the coast.
- Ask permission before using ground you don't own, whether that's a landlord, a farmer or whoever runs the park.
- Plan for the weather. Around Florence, skip days when the soil is rock-hard, frozen or sodden, and wait for still, gentle conditions to plant or release.
- Release gently on water. Set the urn on the surface, let it float and sink on its own, and add only loose petals.
- Come back in a year. Replace mulch, check the tree's growth and take a photo to mark the anniversary.
Remembering your pet in Florence
In Florence, burial remains the traditional choice for people, and on 2 November many families still carry chrysanthemums to relatives' graves. Some now remember a pet in the same season, with flowers beside the ashes or a candle on the windowsill. Having something physical to gather around, whether an urn, a small marble plaque or a keepsake, gives those moments a natural focus.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Florence?
The closest communities we cover are Siena (about 31 miles), Bologna (about 50 miles) and Portofino (about 108 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Florence too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to Bologna to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Bologna (roughly 50 miles from Florence) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do Italy attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Italy human cremation rate at about 38.16%[1]. We show it on the Florence page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is there water cremation for pets near Florence?
It depends on whether a provider nearby has invested in the equipment. Smaller places rarely have their own, but some aquamation providers in larger centres such as Bologna collect from vets across a wide area. Ask your vet whether they work with one. If not, a flame cremation followed by a bio urn still gives you a living memorial.
How long does it take to get ashes back for planting?
Most private cremations return ashes within one to two weeks, and water cremation cycles themselves take 12–20 hours[8], so allow a similar time. In a smaller place, if the cremation happens in a larger centre such as Bologna, it may take a little longer. Planting can wait, so there's no need to rush.
How long does a water-soluble urn take to dissolve?
Most are made from salt, sand, paper or gelatin and dissolve within minutes to hours once they sink. Some float briefly first, long enough for a few words: one maker's water urn floats for several minutes before dissolving[9]. Calm water gives the best result, so check the forecast for wind before you go.
