Groningen, Netherlands
Your living memorial options around Groningen
Gardens in the city are small, but many people in the surrounding villages have space for a tree or shrub. A biodegradable urn planted under a young tree can suit someone who wants the memorial to grow. Groningen's clay soils stay wet much of the year, so choose a planting spot that drains reasonably well. A weather-resistant engraved stone is another option for a courtyard or balcony, if it's chosen with rain and frost in mind.
Most Groningen homes are apartments or narrow row houses, so memorials here are usually modest in size: a small ceramic urn on a bookcase, a framed photo with a paw print, or a keepsake that holds a little of the ashes. If you share a flat or move often, as many students and young professionals do, a portable memorial makes more sense than anything fixed. Ask about keepsake containers if others want a share.
In a mid-sized place like Groningen, you'll usually find what a living memorial needs within a short drive: a nursery with native stock, a pet crematory or two, and quieter parks and waterways than a big metro. Water cremation may or may not be offered locally, so ask; if not, a provider in a larger centre such as Groningen may serve the area. Bio urns themselves are easy to order, so the choice that matters most is the tree and where it will grow.
Groningen is home to about 203,000 people.
For a second opinion on price, Amsterdam (91 miles, a larger centre), Utrecht (99 miles) and Haarlem (99 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Groningen routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Cremation, burial and green choices in Netherlands
Faith shapes these choices in Netherlands, where cremation covers about 68.37%[1] of deaths and burial much of the rest. Some traditions that prefer burial for people have no view on pets; others do. If this matters to anyone in your household, ask a faith leader you trust. A planting urn puts the ashes back into the ground, which many people find sits comfortably with a burial tradition.
The Netherlands figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Seasons, soil and weather for a memorial in Groningen
If you're unsure what grows in Groningen, visit a public park, a botanic garden or a cemetery with old trees and see which species look healthy after decades. Those are proven in local weather and soil. Take photos of the labels, or of the leaves and bark, and ask a nursery whether a smaller relative would suit your garden.

What bio urns and aquamation cost in Groningen
In Ireland, one pet crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg and EUR 250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[5]. In Norway, separate cremation runs NOK 3,790 to 4,990 by weight[6]. Prices in Groningen will differ, but the pattern holds: ask for individual cremation and a simple container, then order the biodegradable urn on its own.

What Netherlands allows for ashes, in general terms
Water releases need a little more care than a garden planting. Rivers, lakes, reservoirs and coastal waters in Netherlands are managed by different bodies, and drinking-water sources are often off-limits. Wherever you release, use only a water-soluble urn or loose ashes, add nothing but loose flower petals, and let no plastic, ribbon or wreath wire float away.
In the Netherlands, individual dog cremation averages about €300[8], and some Dutch pet crematoria offer scattering fields or memorial gardens as an alternative to planting at home. A Dutch life-cycle study put water cremation's climate impact far below flame cremation's for people[9]. With small gardens common, a large pot or a scattering field is often the practical choice.
Your next steps, whatever your situation
- If your pet dies while you're away from Groningen, have a vet close to where you are set up individual cremation locally. Transporting a body a long way home almost never works out.
- Ask how the ashes can reach you: collected in person, posted by a tracked courier service, or sent to your own vet.
- Flying home with the ashes? Keep them in your carry-on, inside a container security can scan, and pack the crematory's paperwork alongside them.
- Don't buy the bio urn on the road. Hold off until you're back and have settled on a location, then choose an urn that suits it.
- Plant somewhere that links both places if the idea appeals: perhaps a species native to the area your pet died in, or one already growing at home, provided it can cope with the climate in Groningen.
- Write down the date and place where your pet died and where it was cremated. Those details fade faster than you'd expect.
Remembering your pet, in Groningen and wherever you go next
Dutch design sensibilities show in the memorials people here tend to pick: simple, clean shapes, natural materials and nothing too ornate. Wooden or stoneware urns, minimalist jewelry holding a trace of ashes, or a single engraved tile can all fit that taste. If you're unsure, start with a plain urn at home and decide later whether you'd like part of the ashes made into something else, since that can often be arranged afterwards.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Groningen?
Usually yes. Amsterdam is about 91 miles away, Utrecht is about 99 miles away and Haarlem is about 99 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Netherlands attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Netherlands human cremation rate at about 68.37%[1]. We show it on the Groningen page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is water cremation for pets available in Europe?
It's still rare. Ireland opened Europe's first human water cremation service in 2023[10], and Norway has since opened a route for funeral homes to seek approval[11]. Pet aquamation near Groningen may not exist yet, so ask crematoria directly. If it doesn't, ordinary cremation followed by a planting in good compost still makes a lower-impact farewell.
Can I plant a tree directly on my pet's ashes in Groningen?
It's better not to. Cremated remains have a very high pH, around 11.7[12], and they're high in sodium, so a solid layer of ash under the roots can yellow or kill a young tree. Mix the ashes through plenty of compost and soil across a wider area, test the pH, and plant once it has come down. There's no single mixing ratio that suits every pet and every soil.
Will the seed in a tree urn grow?
Not always. Seeds from kits can fail to sprout if they weren't stored or chilled correctly, and alkaline soil around them makes it harder. A young tree from a nursery near Groningen is far more reliable, and most planting urns work just as well with a sapling in the top chamber.
How do I stop my other dog digging up the memorial?
Fresh soil with bone ash in it is interesting to dogs. Lay a piece of wire mesh just under the mulch, surround the planting with flat stones, or put up a short temporary fence for the first few months. Walk your dog past the spot on a lead a few times so it becomes familiar. Interest usually fades once the soil settles.
