Harvey, Illinois
Living memorials in Harvey: the local picture
Chicago-area winters are rough on garden markers. Moisture soaks into porous stone and cheap resin, freezes, and splits it by March. If you want something outdoors in Harvey, choose granite or bronze, set it level on packed gravel rather than bare soil, and skip thin ceramic plaques, which tend to lose their glaze after a season or two of freeze and thaw.
Families spread across several homes often divide the ashes: a spoonful in a keepsake vial for a grown child, a little for a tree planted in spring, the rest in one main urn in Harvey. Ask for a clay paw print or a fur clipping before cremation, because neither can be made afterward. Engraving with a name and dates can be added whenever you like.
Deliveries can take longer to reach a place like Harvey, and bio urns, water urns and mail-order saplings are no exception. Order the urn soon after you decide, rather than the week before the planting. If a nursery nearby carries hardy local trees, buy there instead, and check the root ball: a healthy tree has firm, pale roots that aren't circling tightly in the pot.
With roughly 19,849 residents, Harvey is the 124th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Chicago, roughly 19 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Harvey run from there.
Our pages for South Holland (3 miles), Dolton (3 miles) and Homewood (3 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Harvey as well.
Our estimate
7,300
Harvey: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
19,849 ÷ 2.5 = 7,940 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 7,300. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
610
Estimated dog and cat losses in Harvey each year
How we calculated this
7,300 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 610 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

How Illinois feels about cremation
About 60.2%[5] of people in Illinois are cremated, which puts it in the middle: cremation is common, but so is burial. For pets, that often means families weigh a planting urn against a whole-body burial in the yard. Both can grow a tree. The planting urn takes less space and can go almost anywhere; a whole-body grave needs more depth and distance from water, and the tree should go beside it rather than directly on top.
The Illinois percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Harvey, not as a count of pets.
Harvey seasons and your memorial tree
In places like Harvey, driveways and sidewalks are often salted in January, February, March and December. Ashes already add sodium to the soil, and road salt splashed onto the same bed doubles the load. Keep a memorial planting well back from salted paths and the edge of the road, and away from where snow gets piled. A spot uphill from the drive is better than one downhill of it.
Freezing and thawing through January, February, March and December can heave a newly planted tree out of the ground in Harvey. If you plant in autumn, mulch well after the first frost to keep the soil temperature steady, and check the base of the tree in spring. A spring planting avoids the problem entirely and gives roots a full growing season before the next winter.

Adding up the cost of a bio urn memorial in Harvey
The container the ashes come back in can quietly add to the bill. One Virginia crematory, for example, sells private cremation at $189 with a temporary container and $225 with a wooden urn[6]. If you're planting, the plain option is all you need. Wooden pet urns alone run about $30–$150[7] in one national guide, money that could buy a good tree for your Harvey garden instead.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Illinois: Illinois costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Scattering and planting rules in Illinois
Carrying ashes from one place to another is usually simple, but keep the paperwork. The certificate or letter from the crematory shows what's in the container, which helps if you're crossing borders, flying out of Illinois or handing the ashes to a cemetery. Keep a copy with the ashes and another somewhere safe at home.

For Illinois's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Illinois guide. Local rules in Harvey can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
How to plan a living memorial, in order
- Confirm the ashes will come back. With a communal cremation there's normally nothing to collect afterwards, which leaves you with nothing to put in an urn.
- Pick the type of bio urn: one that grows a tree, a simple biodegradable urn to bury in a quiet bed, or a floating urn meant for a lake, river or the coast.
- Ask permission from the landowner, landlord or park manager for anywhere that isn't yours.
- Plan for the weather. In Harvey, avoid frozen, baked or waterlogged ground; a calm, mild day is best for planting or a release.
- Release gently on water. Rest the urn on the surface, leave it to drift and go under in its own time, and scatter only a few loose petals.
- Come back in a year. Top up the mulch, see how much the tree has put on, and photograph it to record the first anniversary.
Remembering your pet, in Harvey and wherever you go next
In Harvey a memorial often has to suit a small yard or an apartment shelf, so many people start with something compact: a wooden box on a bookcase, a framed paw print, or a pendant holding a pinch of ash. There is no deadline. Ashes normally come back in a sealed temporary container that can sit safely in a cupboard until you feel ready to choose something permanent.

Questions people ask
How does Harvey's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Harvey, with average highs around 85°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Harvey?
The closest communities we cover are South Holland (about 3 miles), Dolton (about 3 miles) and Homewood (about 3 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Harvey too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Harvey page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 60.2%[5] of Illinois residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is Harvey big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 7,300 Harvey households keep a dog or cat and around 610 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 19,849), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
How do I prepare pet ashes for planting?
Spread the ashes through a large volume of compost and soil rather than pouring them into the hole in one layer. Many gardeners add acidic material such as composted pine bark or leaf mould. One gardening guide suggests letting the mix rest for 90–120 days[9] before planting. A garden-center pH kit tells you when the mix is ready.
How much does pet aquamation cost?
One US pet insurer's guide lists aquamation at $80 to $450 depending on size[10]. As a real example, a Delaware provider charges $150–$450[11] for private aquamation by weight, including a standard urn, and $50–$225[12] for communal. Prices in Harvey depend on who offers it, so ask for a written total.
