Where a living memorial fits in Orem
Student renters, young families and residents who have lived in Orem for decades tend to want very different memorials. A compact photo urn or a keepsake pendant travels easily if you move after graduation. Long-term homeowners sometimes prefer a garden marker under a fruit tree, a nod to the city's orchard past, which can stay with the house even if the ashes are kept indoors.
With Mount Timpanogos in view from much of the city, some Orem families choose a mountain theme for a memorial: an engraved stone with the peak's outline, or a photograph from a favorite trail framed beside the urn. If you hope to scatter ashes in the canyon or on the mountain, check the rules of the agency that manages that land first, and keep clear of streams and busy trailheads.
Getting a bio urn in Orem is mostly a matter of ordering online, but getting the soil right is a local job. Ask a nursery or your county extension office whether the ground is chalky, clay or sandy. Clay holds salts near the roots and drains poorly, so dig a wider hole and mix in more compost. Sandy soil drains well but holds little, so water the young tree more often in its first summers.
With roughly 95,214 residents, Orem is the 7th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Salt Lake City, roughly 34 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Orem run from there.
Families in Orem often end up using a provider from Provo (5 miles), Pleasant Grove (6 miles) and American Fork (7 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
35,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Orem
How we calculated this
95,214 ÷ 2.5 = 38,086 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 35,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
2,900
Orem families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
35,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,900 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

How Utah feels about cremation
About 46.1%[5] of people in Utah are cremated, well below the rate in many other places. Burial traditions run deep here, and many families still bury pets whole in the yard. If you'd like a living memorial, you have two routes: a whole-body burial with a tree planted beside the grave, or cremation followed by a planting urn. The second takes far less digging and avoids most concerns about wells and water.
The Utah figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Choosing the right month to plant in Orem
With freezing lows in January, February, November and December and hot months like June, July and August, an Orem memorial planting has a short list of good days. If a pet dies in midsummer or midwinter, keep the ashes at home and use the wait well: mix them with compost and let the blend rest, test the pH, and choose the tree. By the time the season turns, everything is ready and the planting day can be calm.
Orem gets both extremes: highs near 95°F in July and freezing lows in January, February, November and December. That leaves two planting windows, spring after the ground thaws and early autumn once the heat breaks. Either works. Autumn planting gives roots time to settle before summer, as long as the tree has several weeks of open ground before the first hard frost.

Eco memorial prices, from urn to tree
A living memorial in Orem has two costs: the cremation and the urn. Biodegradable pet urns are among the cheaper urns you can buy, listed at about $15–$80[6] in one national price guide, and a sapling from a local nursery often costs less than a decorative display urn. If you'd like water cremation, one pet insurer's guide lists aquamation at $80 to $450 depending on size[7]. The table shows published examples.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Utah: Utah costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Scattering and planting rules in Utah
Burying ashes, scattering them loose and releasing them on water are often treated as three different things. In Utah, a place that welcomes a scattering may forbid digging, and a lake that allows a release may not allow a gathering on the shore. When you ask permission, say exactly which one you have in mind.
Utah keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Orem.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Utah level first; our Utah rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Orem or your HOA adds anything.
From ashes to a growing tree: the steps
- If you find your pet has died at home, move them gently onto a towel or blanket in the coolest room you have, and call your vet or a pet crematory. Many will collect or tell you where to bring them.
- Say you want individual cremation and that you plan to plant the ashes. That one sentence steers the provider away from communal options that return nothing.
- Keep the collar, a tag and a little fur while your pet is still with you at home. Later on they can be buried alongside the urn or tucked away in a keepsake box.
- Leave the memorial decisions for another week. Choosing a tree the same night is too much to ask of anyone.
- When the ashes arrive, open the box once to see how much there is and how the inner bag is sealed, then put the lid back and keep it somewhere dry.
- Use our [memorial tree finder](/tools/memorial-tree-finder) once you feel ready, and plan the planting for a calm weekend in the right season.
Ways to mark the spot and the date
Dry air, strong sun and long freezing spells are hard on some materials. Anything left outside in Orem faces summer UV and months below 32 degrees, so pick granite, bronze or glazed stoneware for a permanent piece. Indoors the range is wider: wooden boxes, glass art containing a little ash, framed paw prints, or a display case with a collar, tag and favorite toy.

Questions people ask
Is Orem big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 35,000 Orem households keep a dog or cat and around 2,900 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 95,214), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Orem?
The closest communities we cover are Provo (about 5 miles), Pleasant Grove (about 6 miles) and American Fork (about 7 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Orem too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How does Orem's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Orem, with average highs around 95°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Why does the Orem page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 46.1%[5] of Utah residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How much ash will my pet leave, and will it fit a bio urn?
Cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[9], so a cat returns a few ounces and a large dog several pounds. Many planting kits are designed for a set volume, and a big dog's ashes may not all fit. Use our urn size calculator, and plan to mix any extra into the wider planting bed or keep it for a second memorial.
How much does pet aquamation cost?
One US pet insurer's guide lists aquamation at $80 to $450 depending on size[7]. As a real example, a Delaware provider charges $150–$450[10] for private aquamation by weight, including a standard urn, and $50–$225[11] for communal. Prices in Orem depend on who offers it, so ask for a written total.
