Bio Urns & Eco Memorials in Finland: what to know
In Finland, a living memorial starts with a cremation that returns your pet's own ashes. Communal cremation usually doesn't, so ask for individual cremation if you plan to plant. After that, the choices are personal: a tree in the garden, a shrub in a pot, a plain burial urn or a quiet release on water.
Pet water cremation is still rare in many countries, and Finland is no exception outside its largest cities. If a lower-impact goodbye matters to you, ask local pet crematoria whether they offer it. If not, a flame cremation followed by a biodegradable urn and a native tree is still a thoughtful, greener choice.

Cremation, burial and green choices in Finland
The human cremation rate in Finland sits around 63.95%[1], so many families have a foot in both camps, and generations can disagree. Grandparents may expect a grave in the yard; younger relatives may want ashes they can take with them. Talking it through before the vet asks you to choose saves a hard conversation on a hard day. A tree over buried ashes often satisfies both sides.
We take the Finland percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Adding up the cost of a bio urn memorial in Finland
Water cremation is new in Europe. The first facility for people opened in Ireland in 2023[2], and Norway changed its law in 2022 so funeral homes can apply to offer it[3]. For pets, availability near Finland is limited, so most families use a flame cremation and a biodegradable urn afterwards. Ask local crematoria directly whether they offer it.
In Ireland, one pet crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg and EUR 250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[4]. In Norway, separate cremation runs NOK 3,790 to 4,990 by weight[5]. Prices in Finland will differ, but the pattern holds: ask for individual cremation and a simple container, then order the biodegradable urn on its own.
| Country | Collective (no ashes back) | Individual (ashes back) |
|---|---|---|
| Germany | €85 to €205[6] | €165 to €375 |
| France (20 kg dog) | €70 to €120[7] | €150 to €250 |
| Netherlands (dog, average) | about €200[8] | about €300 |
| Bio urn | Not needed: no ashes come back | Bought separately, sized for the ashes |

Where you can plant or release ashes in Finland
Two questions cover most situations in Finland: who owns or manages this land or water, and have they said yes? For your own garden, the answer is you. For a rented home, it's your landlord, in writing. For parks and public water, it's the relevant agency. For a relative's garden, it's them, and it's worth agreeing that the tree stays even if the house is sold.
What to do first, and what can wait for the right season
- If you find your pet has died at home, move them gently onto a towel or blanket in the coolest room you have, and call your vet or a pet crematory. Many will collect or tell you where to bring them.
- Say you want individual cremation and that you plan to plant the ashes. That one sentence steers the provider away from communal options that return nothing.
- Keep the collar, a tag and a little fur before your pet leaves the house. These can go into the planting later, or into a small keepsake box.
- Leave the memorial decisions for another week. Nobody should have to settle on a species and a spot on the evening their pet died.
- When the ashes arrive, open the box once to see the amount and the inner bag, then close it and store it somewhere dry.
- Use our [memorial tree finder](/tools/memorial-tree-finder) once you feel ready, and plan the planting for a calm weekend in the right season.
Remembering your pet, in Finland and wherever you go next
Grief doesn't end on planting day, and sometimes the quiet afterwards is the hardest part. Free pet-loss lines exist in several countries, including the Cornell Pet Loss Support Hotline in the US, run by veterinary students trained by grief counselors. Talking about your pet while you water the tree, or with someone on the phone, is part of remembering well.

Questions people ask
Are there pet cemeteries in Finland that plant trees over ashes?
Some pet cemeteries and natural burial grounds offer plots for ashes, and a few let families plant something living on top. Ask what the plot costs, whether yearly upkeep fees apply, which urn materials they accept, and what happens to the plot if the cemetery changes hands.
Can I scatter pet ashes on public land in Finland?
Often only with permission. Parks, forests, beaches and waterways are each managed by an authority with its own policy, and some prohibit scattering entirely. Contact the land manager, explain that it's a small amount of pet ash, and ask whether there's a preferred spot. Private land always needs the owner's consent.
Can I plant a memorial if I rent in Finland?
Yes. A large pot with a dwarf tree or shrub moves with you, and only a small share of the ashes should go in it. You could also plant at a relative's home, or choose a water release. If you'd like to plant in a rented garden, ask your landlord in writing first.
Do I need a permit to plant pet ashes in my own garden in Finland?
Generally not. Ashes don't carry the health concerns that rules for burying a whole body address. Keep plantings away from wells, streams and vegetable beds, check any homeowners' association or tenancy rules, and remember that a tree in the ground stays with the property if you sell.
Is pet aquamation available in Finland?
In some places, most often in and around larger cities. Pet providers have adopted water cremation faster than human funeral homes, but availability depends on whether a provider near you has the equipment. Ask local pet crematories directly, or tell us your town and we'll check which providers serve it.
Which trees make a good pet memorial in Finland?
Choose a native tree or shrub that already grows well near you and fits the space in twenty years. Species that tolerate slightly alkaline soil cope best with ashes. A local nursery or extension service can suggest a few, and the tree finder tool on this site sorts options by mature size, light and climate.
