Finns light candles on graves on All Saints' Day and Christmas Eve, and cemeteries glow in the dark. Some families bring the same custom home for a pet, with a candle beside an urn, a framed photo, a keepsake box or a small engraved stone. Children usually like being the one who lights it. Outdoors, lanterns made for graves keep the flame safe in snow.
Central Park, the Nuuksio forests just west of the city and the islands of the archipelago are places many Helsinki families shared with their pets. The local attitude to ashes and memorials
Faith shapes these choices in Finland, where cremation covers about 63.95%[1] of deaths and burial much of the rest. Some traditions that prefer burial for people have no view on pets; others do. If this matters to anyone in your household, ask a faith leader you trust. A planting urn puts the ashes back into the ground, which many people find sits comfortably with a burial tradition.

Land, water and permission in Uusimaa
If you live under a homeowners' association, a co-op board or a tenancy agreement in Uusimaa, its rules can matter more than any public law. Many restrict new trees, digging near shared pipes or heavy pots on balconies. A quick read of the rules, or one email to the manager, tells you whether a tree, a shrub bed or a container memorial is the right fit.
Planting a memorial in Helsinki, step by step
- Take your time. Nothing about a bio urn is urgent. Arrange cremation first and collect the ashes when they're ready; planting can wait weeks or months.
- Ask for individual cremation, flame or water, so the ashes you plant are your pet's own. Ask for them in a plain container if you won't keep a display urn.
- Check how much ash you have. Most kits hold a fixed amount, so the remains of a big dog can overflow what the urn was designed for.
- Choose the place and the tree together. Weigh up light, room to spread, buried pipes or cables, and whether you're likely to be at that address a decade from now.
- Mix, don't layer. Work the ashes evenly into plenty of soil and compost, give it a few weeks to settle where possible, and check the pH.
- Plant in the right season, whatever that is in Helsinki, soak the roots and mulch a wide circle.
- Mark the spot using a modest stone or a garden tag, and write the planting date down where it won't get lost.
Living memorials beyond the backyard
Helsinki apartments call for compact memorials, and Finnish design leans toward birch, ceramic, glass and clean lines. A small urn on a shelf, a pendant with a trace of ash, a paw impression or a glass keepsake suits most homes. Check a proof of any engraving carefully, because suppliers abroad often drop the dots from ä and ö. Glass pieces with ash set inside are another option.

How do Finland attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Finland human cremation rate at about 63.95%[1]. We show it on the Helsinki page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
What happens to the memorial tree if I move away from Helsinki?
It stays with the land, and ashes mixed into soil can't be recovered. If a move is possible, plant in a large container, plant at a relative's home, or keep a small portion of the ashes back for a future garden. Cuttings from many shrubs root easily, so you can take a piece of the plant with you.
Is water cremation better for the environment?
It uses much less energy: pet aquamation is claimed to use about 90%[8] less energy than flame cremation, and it uses about as much water as 1–3 pet baths[9] per pet. The strongest carbon figures come from studies of human funerals, not pets, so treat them as a direction rather than a promise. You still get ashes back for a bio urn.
Is pet aquamation available in Helsinki?
Quite possibly. Large cities are where pet water cremation is most often offered, because the equipment is a big investment and providers set up where demand is highest. Ask local pet crematories directly, or tell us you're in Helsinki and we'll let you know which providers serve the area. Ashes from aquamation work in any bio urn.
Can I bring a bio urn with seeds into my country?
Check before you order. Many countries restrict imported seeds and plant material, and a tree urn that ships with a seed capsule may be held or destroyed at the border. The simple fix is to buy an urn without the seed and plant a young tree from a nursery near Helsinki, which grows more reliably anyway.
Is water cremation for pets available in Europe?
It's still rare. Ireland opened Europe's first human water cremation service in 2023[10], and Norway has since opened a route for funeral homes to seek approval[11]. Pet aquamation near Helsinki may not exist yet, so ask crematoria directly. If it doesn't, ordinary cremation followed by a planting in good compost still makes a lower-impact farewell.
