Living memorials in Reims: the local picture
Reims is a city of monuments, from the cathedral to the Champagne houses' chalk cellars, and many families here like the idea of a lasting, crafted memorial. A carved stone, a ceramic urn or a small engraved plaque suits that sense of permanence. If you live in a flat, a compact urn or keepsake box can sit on a shelf without taking space.
Not every memorial needs to be large. A pendant or ring holding a little ash, a paw print in clay, or a framed photo with the collar can mean just as much as an urn. If you're not ready to choose, ask for the ashes in a simple container first, then decide on a lasting memorial when you know what fits your home.
Native plant sales are one of the best-kept secrets in places like Reims. Conservation groups, garden clubs and parks departments often run them in spring and autumn, selling young native trees and shrubs at modest prices. A seedling bought there has been grown for local conditions and is small enough to settle in quickly. Check the local calendar, and time the planting to match.
With roughly 182,000 residents, Reims is the 2nd-largest of the 2 Grand Est communities we cover.
Our pages for Paris (81 miles, a larger centre), Neuilly-sur-Seine (84 miles) and Versailles (92 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Reims as well.

How France feels about cremation
Only around 44.91%[1] of deaths in France end in cremation, so there may be fewer pet crematories close by, and the ashes can take longer to come back. Ask your vet how long it usually takes and whether the ashes are returned to the clinic or to your door. That wait is a chance to pick a tree and plan the planting in the right season.

Weather, soil and planting windows in Reims
The right tree for Reims is one that already grows well in local gardens and parks. Walk around your neighborhood and note what looks healthy in older yards, then ask a nursery about those species. A native or well-established local tree will handle the weather far better than a seed from a kit made for another climate.

What a greener goodbye costs in Reims
Water cremation is new in Europe. The first facility for people opened in Ireland in 2023[5], and Norway changed its law in 2022 so funeral homes can apply to offer it[6]. For pets, availability near Reims is limited, so most families use a flame cremation and a biodegradable urn afterwards. Ask local crematoria directly whether they offer it.

Land, water and permission in Grand Est
Natural burial grounds and some pet cemeteries in Grand Est accept ashes in biodegradable urns, and a few ask for nothing else: no plastic, no metal, no varnish. If you're considering one, ask what the urn may be made of, whether a tree or marker is allowed above it, and whether the fee includes looking after the plot.
In France, individual pet cremation typically costs €150 to €250 for a 20 kg dog[8], and the ashes can be kept, buried on your own land or scattered in nature with care. Pet water cremation is rare. Much of France has chalky, alkaline soil, so if you plant ashes, choose a lime-tolerant tree and be generous with compost.
From ashes to a growing tree: the steps
- If you're remembering more than one animal, settle at the start on one shared planting or separate ones. Either works, but once the ashes are combined there's no undoing it.
- Label each container clearly with the name and date as it comes back, especially if the ashes return months or years apart.
- Choose a bigger planting area when there are several sets of ashes; a long hedge, a cluster of shrubs or a few fruit trees gives the minerals more ground to disperse into.
- Keep a spoonful of each in separate keepsakes if anyone in the family wants to remember one animal on its own.
- Plan for the pets still living with you. A new planting that smells of bone attracts diggers, so protect it for the first few months.
- Add a marker for each name, or one stone that lists them all, so visitors know who the planting is for.
Remembering your pet in Reims
For families with a garden or a house in the countryside around Reims, a planted memorial is a gentle choice: a bio urn with a tree or a rose bush, or a flower bed with a small stone. Cold winters can crack thin materials, so choose natural stone or solid ceramic for anything left outside year-round. Many villages around Reims have old stone walls and orchards that make a quiet corner for a plaque.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Reims?
Usually yes. Paris is about 81 miles away, Neuilly-sur-Seine is about 84 miles away and Versailles is about 92 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in France?
For people, yes: about 44.91%[1] of France deaths end in cremation, according to ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Reims follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How do I stop my other dog digging up the memorial?
Fresh soil with bone ash in it is interesting to dogs. Lay a piece of wire mesh just under the mulch, surround the planting with flat stones, or put up a short temporary fence for the first few months. Walk your dog past the spot on a lead a few times so it becomes familiar. Interest usually fades once the soil settles.
What if the soil in Reims is already alkaline?
Then ashes push it further, so be generous with compost and composted bark, choose a lime-tolerant tree or shrub, and test the pH before planting. Chalky and limestone soils are common in many regions. Plants that dislike lime, such as azaleas and blueberries, are a poor choice for an ash planting anywhere.
How long does it take to get ashes back for planting?
Most private cremations return ashes within one to two weeks, and water cremation cycles themselves take 12–20 hours[9], so allow a similar time. In a smaller place, if the cremation happens in a larger centre such as Reims, it may take a little longer. Planting can wait, so there's no need to rush.
How long can I keep pet ashes before planting them?
As long as you like. Cremated remains don't break down or spoil in a sealed container, so a planting can happen next month, next year or after a move to a house with a garden. What does break down is a biodegradable urn, so keep the ashes in their original container and only transfer them into the bio urn shortly before planting.
