Bio Urns & Eco Memorials in Hiroshima: what to know
Soil across Hiroshima varies from acidic to chalky and from sandy to heavy clay, and that matters because ashes are strongly alkaline and salty. On already alkaline ground, mix in extra compost and choose a lime-tolerant species. On clay, dig a wider hole. A simple pH test before and after mixing tells you where you stand.
Freezing winters shape planting across much of Hiroshima: in about of the communities we cover, average lows stay below freezing for three months or more. There, the usual plan is to keep the ashes indoors through winter, prepare the soil mix, and plant once the ground has thawed. Ashes keep safely for as long as you need.

Cremation, burial and green choices in Hiroshima
Scattering gardens and woodland memorials are familiar sights in Hiroshima, where cremation is the choice for around 99.97%[1] of people who die. Many families already have a place where a grandparent's ashes were scattered. If that place is on land you own or have permission to use, a pet's ashes can join it quietly. Human cemeteries and crematoria grounds are different, and most don't accept animal remains, so ask first.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Hiroshima rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
What bio urns and aquamation cost in Hiroshima
Pet aftercare in much of Asia is sold as packages, and bio urns are less common than columbarium niches. In Singapore, private cremation runs about SGD 280 for a cat and SGD 480 for a 10 to 20 kg dog, with niches from SGD 300 for the first year[2]. If you'd like a planting or water memorial in Hiroshima, ask for individual cremation with the ashes returned to you.
In Singapore, communal cremation of a cat under 5 kg costs about SGD 160[3], but communal means no ashes come back. A columbarium niche is a recurring cost too, renewed at SGD 180 a year after the first[2]. For families in Hiroshima who'd rather have something growing, individual cremation and a potted tree at home is a one-off expense.
| Place | Example | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore (10–20 kg dog) | SGD 260 communal / SGD 480 private[2] | Columbarium niches extra |
| Hong Kong (20–30 kg dog) | HKD 3,000 individual[4] | Basic cremation |
| Tokyo (20–30 kg dog) | JPY 38,500 individual[5] | JPY 60,500 attended, with chanting |
| Bio urn | Bought separately | Ask for ashes in a plain container if you plan to plant |

Who to ask before you plant or scatter in Hiroshima
Burying ashes, scattering them loose and releasing them on water are often treated as three different things. In Hiroshima, a place that welcomes a scattering may forbid digging, and a lake that allows a release may not allow a gathering on the shore. When you ask permission, say exactly which one you have in mind.
In Japan, burying animals in public places such as parks or forests is illegal[7], so a planting memorial usually means a private garden or a pot on a balcony. Pet temples and memorial parks are common, and many families keep some ashes in a columbarium while planting a small share. Seeds in imported urns may face plant-quarantine checks.
Your next steps, whatever your situation
- If your pet dies while you're away from Hiroshima, have a vet close to where you are set up individual cremation locally. Transporting a body a long way home almost never works out.
- Ask how the ashes can reach you: collected in person, posted by a tracked courier service, or sent to your own vet.
- Flying home with the ashes? Keep them in your carry-on, inside a container security can scan, and pack the crematory's paperwork alongside them.
- Don't buy the bio urn on the road. Wait until you're home and know the spot, so the urn matches the place.
- Plant somewhere that links both places if you like: a tree from the region where your pet died, or one from your own garden, if it suits the climate in Hiroshima.
- Write down the date and place of your pet's death and the name of the crematory. Memories of those particulars slip away sooner than most people think.
Remembering your pet, in Hiroshima and wherever you go next
A memorial tree in Hiroshima becomes a calendar of its own: the first leaves, the first flowers, the first year it gives shade. Some families take a photo from the same spot each year. Others tie a ribbon on the tree on their pet's birthday and take it down the next day, so nothing is left to harm the bark.

Questions people ask
Can I release pet ashes at sea off Hiroshima?
Coastal and inland waters are managed by different authorities, and many rules were written for human ashes. In general, choose a quiet spot away from swimmers and anglers, use a water-soluble urn or loose ashes only, and let nothing plastic float away. Check with the relevant authority before you go.
How many communities do you cover in Hiroshima?
We have local living-memorial guides for 1 communities in Hiroshima, including Hiroshima. Each covers local weather and planting seasons, soil advice, prices for bio urns and aquamation where we have sourced figures, and general notes on scattering and water releases.
When will I get my pet's ashes back in Hiroshima?
Our estimate from published return times is a conservative window of 3 to 14 days, with express services sooner and a few providers taking up to four weeks[8]. Ask your provider for their usual time. There's no rush to plant, so the return date matters less than choosing the right season for the tree.
Which trees make a good pet memorial in Hiroshima?
Choose a native tree or shrub that already grows well near you and fits the space in twenty years. Species that tolerate slightly alkaline soil cope best with ashes. A local nursery or extension service can suggest a few, and the tree finder tool on this site sorts options by mature size, light and climate.
When should I plant a memorial tree in Hiroshima?
Plant in the mildest part of your local year, when the ground isn't frozen, baked dry or waterlogged. In cold areas that usually means spring after the thaw or early autumn; in hot areas, the cooler months. Ashes can wait safely at home, so choose the season that suits the tree.
Can a pet's ashes be buried with a person's ashes in Hiroshima?
It depends on the cemetery or burial ground. Many human cemeteries don't accept animal remains, though some allow a pet's ashes to be placed in an owner's grave or plot. On your own land, combining ashes in one planting is generally a private decision. Ask the cemetery directly and get their answer in writing.
