Gangnam, Seoul
Your living memorial options around Gangnam
Korean pet funerals often end with a choice of memorial: an urn placed in a pet columbarium, ashes kept at home, or ashes turned into small, glossy memorial beads, sometimes called memorial stones, that sit in a dish or jar. Others choose jewelry with a trace of ash or a framed paw print. In a Gangnam apartment, compact memorials that fit a shelf or display cabinet are by far the most practical.
Many Korean families mark Chuseok and Seollal with ancestral rites, and some extend a similar care to a pet: a photo on a shelf with a small offering of a favorite treat, or a visit to the columbarium over the holiday. Others prefer something modern and discreet, like memorial beads in a glass jar or a slim pendant worn to work. Neither is more respectful. Choose what fits the way your family remembers.
Apartment life in Gangnam makes the soil question more important, not less. In a pot there's nowhere for the salts in ashes to drain away to, so only a small share of the ashes should go into a container, well mixed with compost, and the rest can be kept, scattered or planted elsewhere later. A spoonful mixed into a lavender or rosemary pot on the windowsill is a real, living memorial, and it avoids the problems of a large ash load in a small root space.
Gangnam's population is around 561,000, the 2nd-largest of the 2 Seoul communities we cover.
If you want to compare providers, look at Seoul (5 miles, a larger centre), Incheon (18 miles, a larger centre) and Daejeon (82 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

What local attitudes to cremation mean in South Korea
Cremation is the usual choice for people in South Korea: about 92.43%[1] of those who die there are cremated. That figure is about people, not pets, but it tells you something useful. Where cremation is ordinary, families already think about what to do with ashes, and planting or scattering is a familiar next step. You're less likely to have to explain a bio urn to relatives, and more likely to find a crematory nearby that returns ashes promptly.
For the South Korea figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Gangnam rather than as pet data.
When to plant in Gangnam's climate
If you're unsure what grows in Gangnam, visit a public park, a botanic garden or a cemetery with old trees and see which species look healthy after decades. Those are proven in local weather and soil. Take photos of the labels, or of the leaves and bark, and ask a nursery whether a smaller relative would suit your garden.

What bio urns and aquamation cost in Gangnam
In Japan, communal pet cremation is often about half the price of individual services, and burying animals in public places such as parks or forests is illegal[5]. That makes a planting memorial a private-garden or balcony-pot choice for most families in Gangnam. A small potted tree or shrub, with only part of the ashes mixed in, suits apartment life well.

Rules worth knowing in Seoul before you scatter
Rules about ashes were mostly written for people, and pet ashes often sit in a grey area. That's a reason to ask, not a reason to assume. On land you own, planting or burying ashes is generally fine. Anywhere else in Seoul, from parks to beaches to a friend's field, the land manager or owner decides, so ask first.
What to do first, and what can wait for the right season
- If the ashes have been on a shelf for years, you can still plant them. Cremated remains don't spoil, so there's no deadline.
- Open the container carefully somewhere sheltered from wind, and check whether the ashes are in a sealed bag inside.
- Weigh or measure what you have, then use our urn size calculator to see which planting urn or water urn fits.
- Decide whether to keep any back. After years at home, some families like to plant most of the ashes and keep a spoonful.
- Pick a date that carries meaning, perhaps the day they died or the day they were born, and ask the people who loved them to come.
- Treat the old urn kindly afterwards. Many people reuse a wooden or ceramic urn as a plant pot or keepsake box.
Ways to mark the spot and the date
Many pet funeral facilities around Seoul include a columbarium with glass-fronted niches where families place an urn with photos and small objects. Families visit on anniversaries and holidays, much as they would for relatives. If you want that, ask about fees and how long a niche is held. If you would rather keep ashes at home, a compact urn or keepsake works well.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in South Korea?
For people, yes: about 92.43%[1] of South Korea deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Gangnam follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Gangnam?
Usually yes. Seoul is about 5 miles away, Incheon is about 18 miles away and Daejeon is about 82 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How much ash will my pet leave, and will it fit a bio urn?
Cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[7], so a cat returns a few ounces and a large dog several pounds. Many planting kits are designed for a set volume, and a big dog's ashes may not all fit. Use our urn size calculator, and plan to mix any extra into the wider planting bed or keep it for a second memorial.
Which memorial plants are dangerous to cats and dogs?
Lilies are highly toxic to cats, even the pollen. Sago palm, oleander, yew, azalea and foxglove can poison dogs, and several of them harm cats and horses too. If you have pets at home in Gangnam, ask a vet or nursery to confirm a plant is safe before you buy it. Grasses, many herbs and most fruit trees are safer choices, though large amounts of fallen fruit can still upset a dog's stomach.
I rent in Gangnam. Can I still have a living memorial?
Yes. Plant in a large container, such as a half-barrel or a big pot with a dwarf tree or flowering shrub, and it moves with you. Use only a small share of the ashes in the pot, well mixed with compost. If you'd like to plant in a rented yard, get the landlord's permission in writing, and remember the tree stays when you leave.
What if the soil in Gangnam is already alkaline?
Then ashes push it further, so be generous with compost and composted bark, choose a lime-tolerant tree or shrub, and test the pH before planting. Chalky and limestone soils are common in many regions. Plants that dislike lime, such as azaleas and blueberries, are a poor choice for an ash planting anywhere.
