What local attitudes to cremation mean in Spain
In Spain, with a human cremation rate of roughly 50.11%[1], you'll often find pet cemeteries and pet crematories operating side by side. Some cemeteries now offer small plots for ashes, occasionally with a tree or shrub above them. That's worth comparing with a garden planting at home: a cemetery plot stays put if you move, while your own garden costs nothing and stays private.

What Oviedo's climate means for a living memorial

Where you can plant or release ashes in Asturias
Rules about ashes were mostly written for people, and pet ashes often sit in a grey area. That's a reason to ask, not a reason to assume. On land you own, planting or burying ashes is generally fine. Anywhere else in Asturias, from parks to beaches to a friend's field, the land manager or owner decides, so ask first.
What to do first, and what can wait for the right season
- Decide what the memorial is for. A place to visit, something growing, a return to water or a lower-impact goodbye each point to a different choice.
- If a greener cremation matters, ask about aquamation first, since no other choice in the process changes the environmental picture as much.
- Keep a small portion back in a keepsake in case a house move or a second memorial is on the cards down the line.
- Buy the tree locally. A young native tree from a grower around Oviedo tends to outgrow anything sprouted from a packet seed.
- Prepare the soil a season ahead where you can, and the mixture of compost and ash will have settled by the time you dig the hole.

Is cremation common in Spain?
For people, yes: about 50.11%[1] of Spain deaths end in cremation, according to Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Oviedo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Is water cremation better for the environment?

How long does it take to get ashes back for planting?
Most private cremations return ashes within one to two weeks, and water cremation cycles themselves take 12–20 hours[10], so allow a similar time. In a smaller place, if the cremation happens in a larger centre such as Oviedo, it may take a little longer. Planting can wait, so there's no need to rush.
Will the seed in a tree urn grow?
Not always. Seeds from kits can fail to sprout if they weren't stored or chilled correctly, and alkaline soil around them makes it harder. A young tree from a nursery near Oviedo is far more reliable, and most planting urns work just as well with a sapling in the top chamber.
Can I put two pets' ashes in the same bio urn?
Yes, if the urn is big enough and everyone agrees, because once the ashes are mixed they can't be separated. Check the combined amount first: cremated remains weigh about 3-5% of body weight[11], so two large dogs may be too much for a single planting urn. Many families plant two urns close together instead, or set aside a pinch of each animal's ashes in a locket or small jar.
