Bilbao, Basque Country
Where a living memorial fits in Bilbao
The landscape around Bilbao offers quiet places for remembrance: the paths up Artxanda or Pagasarri, the Atlantic coast at Getxo and Sopelana, or the woods of the Gorbeia natural park. Some people scatter a little of the ashes at a favourite place and keep the rest at home. Check local rules for protected areas and beaches, and consider a biodegradable urn if you'd like the ashes to return to the earth.
Space in a Bilbao flat is limited, so many families choose a small urn, a keepsake pendant or a paw print impression rather than something large. A compact urn on a shelf with a photograph can sit comfortably in a busy family home. If you'd like to share ashes with relatives elsewhere in Bizkaia or beyond, ask for small keepsake containers alongside the main urn.
If you'd like water cremation, Bilbao is the kind of place where it may be offered by one local provider or by a larger centre such as Bilbao. It's worth one phone call to find out. Some aquamation providers collect from a vet clinic across a wide area, and turnaround is usually measured in days to a couple of weeks rather than hours, so there's no need to decide anything in the first evening.
Bilbao's population is around 346,000, the largest of the 2 Basque Country communities we cover.
Our pages for Santander (46 miles), San Sebastian (48 miles) and Pamplona (72 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Bilbao as well.

Cremation habits in Spain, and what they mean for a bio urn
The share of people cremated in Spain, now about 50.11%[1], keeps inching up. For pet owners, that shift has brought more questions about what to do once the ashes come home. There's no need to decide on the day. Many families keep the ashes for a season, talk about what their pet loved, and only then settle on a tree, a pot or a lake.
The Spain percentage above is from Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Bilbao, not as a count of pets.
Choosing the right month to plant in Bilbao
The right tree for Bilbao is one that already grows well in local gardens and parks. Walk around your neighborhood and note what looks healthy in older yards, then ask a nursery about those species. A native or well-established local tree will handle the weather far better than a seed from a kit made for another climate.

Price ranges for planting and water urns
In France, a 20 kg dog costs about €70 to €120 for collective cremation and €150 to €250 for individual[5], while Dutch averages are about €200 and €300[6]. Those prices usually include a basic container. If you'd like a planting urn in Bilbao, ask for the ashes in a plain container and buy the bio urn separately, sized for the amount of ash you'll receive.
The full price table by product is on our Basque Country page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Rules worth knowing in Basque Country before you scatter
Two questions cover most situations in Basque Country: who owns or manages this land or water, and have they said yes? For your own garden, the answer is you. For a rented home, it's your landlord, in writing. For parks and public water, it's the relevant agency. For a relative's garden, it's them, and it's worth agreeing that the tree stays even if the house is sold.
Your next steps, whatever your situation
- Take your time. There's no clock running on a bio urn. Sort out the cremation, bring the ashes home once they're released, and plant whenever you're ready, even months later.
- Ask for individual cremation, by flame or by water, so you know the ashes going into the ground are your pet's alone. A plain box is enough when a display urn isn't part of the plan.
- Check how much ash you have. Most kits hold a fixed amount, so the remains of a big dog can overflow what the urn was designed for.
- Choose the place and the tree together. Think about sun, space, underground pipes and whether you'll still live there in ten years.
- Mix, don't layer. Blend the ashes through plenty of compost and soil, let the mix rest if you can and test the pH.
- Plant in the right season, whatever that is in Bilbao, soak the roots and mulch a wide circle.
- Mark the spot with a small stone or plant label, and note the date somewhere you'll find it.
Keeping the memorial alive in Bilbao
In Spain, cremation of people now accounts for around half of funerals, and many Bilbao families are comfortable keeping ashes at home. For a pet, that might mean an urn in the living room, a small engraved stone on a balcony, or a memorial tree planted at a family caserío. For outdoor pieces, pick materials that handle Bilbao's rain, such as stone or sealed ceramic.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bilbao?
Usually yes. Santander is about 46 miles away, San Sebastian is about 48 miles away and Pamplona is about 72 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Bilbao page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I scatter my pet's ashes in a park in Bilbao?
Usually only with permission, and some parks don't allow it at all. Parks are managed by a city, county, state or national agency, each with its own policy, and many were written for human ashes. Contact the park office, explain it's a small amount of pet ash, and ask whether there's a preferred spot.
Will the seed in a tree urn grow?
Not always. Seeds from kits can fail to sprout if they weren't stored or chilled correctly, and alkaline soil around them makes it harder. A young tree from a nursery near Bilbao is far more reliable, and most planting urns work just as well with a sapling in the top chamber.
How much does pet cremation cost before I buy a bio urn?
In most of Europe, individual cremation, which returns your pet's ashes, costs roughly twice as much as collective. In Germany it's listed at about €165 to €375[8]. Ask a crematorium near Bilbao for individual cremation and the ashes in a plain container, then buy the bio urn separately.
What happens to the memorial tree if I move away from Bilbao?
It stays with the land, and ashes mixed into soil can't be recovered. If a move is possible, plant in a large container, plant at a relative's home, or keep a small portion of the ashes back for a future garden. Cuttings from many shrubs root easily, so you can take a piece of the plant with you.
