Growing something from the goodbye in Pamplona
Pet ashes are strongly alkaline and salty, so they need mixing and time before anything is planted over them. Here's how to do it well in Pamplona, and what it costs.
- When to plant in your season
- How much ash your urn must hold
- Aquamation providers in your area

Planning a greener goodbye in Pamplona
The parks inside Pamplona, such as the Ciudadela and the Taconera gardens, and the path along the Arga river are places many residents return to regularly. Some owners want a memorial that connects to those spaces, but scattering in city parks is generally not allowed without permission. A plant on a balcony over a biodegradable urn, or a small memorial stone at a family home in the countryside, may be a better fit.
Many Pamplona families have roots in villages across Navarre, and some prefer to take the ashes back there. A biodegradable urn buried under a tree at a family property, or a small stone in a garden in the village, can create a lasting place to remember. If you're planning this, a sturdy urn for the journey and a clear idea of where the memorial will go help you choose the right option.
Families in Pamplona often combine a private cremation arranged through their vet with a planting at home a few weeks or months later. That gap is normal and useful. It gives you time to choose a species, prepare the soil mix and wait for the right planting season. Ask the crematory for the ashes in a simple container rather than paying for a decorative urn you won't keep, and put that money toward a good tree.
With roughly 201,000 residents, Pamplona is one of the Navarre communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Bilbao, about 72 miles (116 km) away, which is where some providers serving Pamplona are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at San Sebastian (39 miles), Bilbao (72 miles) and Zaragoza (89 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

How Spain feels about cremation
The share of people cremated in Spain, now about 50.11%[1], keeps inching up. For pet owners, that shift has brought more questions about what to do once the ashes come home. There's no need to decide on the day. Many families keep the ashes for a season, talk about what their pet loved, and only then settle on a tree, a pot or a lake.
The Spain percentage above is from Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Pamplona, not as a count of pets.
Choosing the right month to plant in Pamplona
One cautious approach in Pamplona: plant the memorial in a large pot for its first year and watch how it copes through your hottest and coldest weeks. If it thrives, move it into the ground the following autumn or spring, pot and all removed, with the ash blend around it. If it struggles, you've learned that before committing to a spot.

Adding up the cost of a bio urn memorial in Pamplona
In Ireland, one pet crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg and EUR 250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[5]. In Norway, separate cremation runs NOK 3,790 to 4,990 by weight[6]. Prices in Pamplona will differ, but the pattern holds: ask for individual cremation and a simple container, then order the biodegradable urn on its own.
The Navarre price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

What Navarre allows for ashes, in general terms
Carrying ashes from one place to another is usually simple, but keep the paperwork. The certificate or letter from the crematory shows what's in the container, which helps if you're crossing borders, flying out of Navarre or handing the ashes to a cemetery. Keep a copy with the ashes and another somewhere safe at home.
What to do first, and what can wait for the right season
- Take your time. There's no clock running on a bio urn. Sort out the cremation, bring the ashes home once they're released, and plant whenever you're ready, even months later.
- Ask for individual cremation, flame or water, so the ashes you plant are your pet's own. Ask for them in a plain container if you won't keep a display urn.
- Check how much ash you have. Many kits are sized for a set volume, and a large dog's ashes may not all fit.
- Choose the place and the tree together. Weigh up light, room to spread, buried pipes or cables, and whether you're likely to be at that address a decade from now.
- Mix, don't layer. Blend the ashes through plenty of compost and soil, let the mix rest if you can and test the pH.
- Plant in the right season, whatever that is in Pamplona, soak the roots and mulch a wide circle.
- Mark the spot with a small stone or plant label, and note the date somewhere you'll find it.
Ways to mark the spot and the date
In a Pamplona apartment, a memorial usually needs to be compact: a small urn on a shelf, a photo with a paw print, or a keepsake holding a little of the ashes. Ceramic and wooden urns fit well in traditional homes, while simple metal or stone suits modern flats. If family members want a share, ask about dividing the ashes into smaller containers when you arrange the cremation.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Pamplona?
Usually yes. San Sebastian is about 39 miles away, Bilbao is about 72 miles away and Zaragoza is about 89 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Pamplona page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Bilbao to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Bilbao (roughly 72 miles from Pamplona) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can I bring a bio urn with seeds into my country?
Check before you order. Many countries restrict imported seeds and plant material, and a tree urn that ships with a seed capsule may be held or destroyed at the border. The simple fix is to buy an urn without the seed and plant a young tree from a nursery near Pamplona, which grows more reliably anyway.
Is there water cremation for pets near Pamplona?
It depends on whether a provider nearby has invested in the equipment. Smaller places rarely have their own, but some aquamation providers in larger centres such as Bilbao collect from vets across a wide area. Ask your vet whether they work with one. If not, a flame cremation followed by a bio urn still gives you a living memorial.
Is it safe to plant a fruit tree with my pet's ashes?
Cremated remains are mostly bone minerals, and once they're thoroughly blended into plenty of compost and garden soil, many gardeners grow fruit trees over them. The high pH and salt are the real concern for the tree, so dilute generously and test the pH. If eating fruit from the memorial feels wrong to anyone in your family, choose an ornamental tree instead.
