Bio Urns & Eco Memorials in Zurich: what to know
A living memorial in Zurich depends on three local things: the weather, the soil and who manages the land or water you have in mind. The bio urn itself is the easy part, since most are ordered online. The choices that decide whether a memorial tree thrives, which species, which season and how the ashes are mixed, change from one corner of Zurich to another.
Rules for ashes in Zurich are mostly written for people, and pet ashes often fall into a grey area. On your own land, planting is generally fine. Parks, beaches, rivers and lakes are managed by different public bodies with their own policies, so it's worth a short email before a scattering or release. We keep our notes general and suggest who to ask.

The local attitude to ashes and memorials
Because cremation is the norm in Zurich, at roughly 90%[1] of deaths, green ideas about ashes are easy to raise without raised eyebrows. In the US, 68%[2] of people in NFDA's 2024 consumer survey expressed interest in green funeral or natural burial options. If you'd like the lower-impact route for a pet, start with the cremation method, then choose an urn that breaks down and a native plant.
The cremation figure for Zurich comes from bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
What bio urns and aquamation cost in Zurich
In France, a 20 kg dog costs about €70 to €120 for collective cremation and €150 to €250 for individual[3], while Dutch averages are about €200 and €300[4]. Those prices usually include a basic container. If you'd like a planting urn in Zurich, ask for the ashes in a plain container and buy the bio urn separately, sized for the amount of ash you'll receive.
Across Europe, pet cremation is priced by weight and bio urns are usually bought separately. In Germany, collective cremation is listed at about €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[5]. Only individual cremation returns your own pet's ashes, so choose it if you plan to plant. The table shows published European cremation prices; bio urns sold online are usually a modest extra.
| Country | Collective (no ashes back) | Individual (ashes back) |
|---|---|---|
| Germany | €85 to €205[5] | €165 to €375 |
| France (20 kg dog) | €70 to €120[3] | €150 to €250 |
| Netherlands (dog, average) | about €200[4] | about €300 |
| Bio urn | Not needed: no ashes come back | Bought separately, sized for the ashes |

Rules worth knowing in Zurich before you scatter
Rules about ashes were mostly written for people, and pet ashes often sit in a grey area. That's a reason to ask, not a reason to assume. On land you own, planting or burying ashes is generally fine. Anywhere else in Zurich, from parks to beaches to a friend's field, the land manager or owner decides, so ask first.
Your next steps, whatever your situation
- If euthanasia is planned, find out from the practice beforehand which crematory handles their aftercare and whether aquamation is available through them.
- Book the aftercare before the appointment, so on the day itself you only have to be with your pet.
- Ask for a paw print or nose print before cremation if you'd like one. It can't be made afterwards.
- Choose the plant in advance when that feels easier. Knowing the exact spot their pet is headed for brings some families real comfort.
- Skip the display urn. A simple box or tube from the crematory is all a planting needs, and the saving can go toward the tree or shrub.
- Prepare the soil blend while you wait for the ashes, so the planting can follow within a season rather than drifting on for years.
Ways to mark the spot and the date
A small engraved stone beside the planting helps other people understand what the tree means. By our estimate, engraved pet garden stones start at about $39 at the median of three US sellers[7]. A flat slate or river stone painted by hand costs almost nothing and can mean just as much. Choose something that weathers well and won't leach anything into the soil.

Questions people ask
Can a pet's ashes be buried with a person's ashes in Zurich?
It depends on the cemetery or burial ground. Many human cemeteries don't accept animal remains, though some allow a pet's ashes to be placed in an owner's grave or plot. On your own land, combining ashes in one planting is generally a private decision. Ask the cemetery directly and get their answer in writing.
How many communities do you cover in Zurich?
We have local living-memorial guides for 3 communities in Zurich, including Zurich, Kusnacht and Zollikon. Each covers local weather and planting seasons, soil advice, prices for bio urns and aquamation where we have sourced figures, and general notes on scattering and water releases.
Can I release pet ashes at sea off Zurich?
Coastal and inland waters are managed by different authorities, and many rules were written for human ashes. In general, choose a quiet spot away from swimmers and anglers, use a water-soluble urn or loose ashes only, and let nothing plastic float away. Check with the relevant authority before you go.
Is pet aquamation available in Zurich?
In some places, most often in and around larger cities. Pet providers have adopted water cremation faster than human funeral homes, but availability depends on whether a provider near you has the equipment. Ask local pet crematories directly, or tell us your town and we'll check which providers serve it.
Can I scatter pet ashes on public land in Zurich?
Often only with permission. Parks, forests, beaches and waterways are each managed by an authority with its own policy, and some prohibit scattering entirely. Contact the land manager, explain that it's a small amount of pet ash, and ask whether there's a preferred spot. Private land always needs the owner's consent.
When will I get my pet's ashes back in Zurich?
Our estimate from published return times is a conservative window of 3 to 14 days, with express services sooner and a few providers taking up to four weeks[8]. Ask your provider for their usual time. There's no rush to plant, so the return date matters less than choosing the right season for the tree.
