Zollikon, Zurich
Living memorials in Zollikon: the local picture
The Zollikon shoreline, with its lakeside paths and public bathing spots, and the forest trails above Zollikerberg are places many families link with happy memories. Scattering ashes in public spaces or the lake is regulated, so check with the commune first. A garden, a private meadow with permission, or keeping the ashes at home are simpler alternatives. A spot overlooking the lake from the hillside may mean just as much.
Frost and heavy wet snow are tough on outdoor memorials around Zurich. Terracotta and soft sandstone crack, while granite, slate and bronze stay sound for decades. If you plant a tree or shrub with ashes, mix the ash thoroughly into compost first, as ash on its own is too alkaline for roots. A hornbeam or a flowering cherry suits local gardens.
Horses, cattle, goats and sheep often share the land in the country around Zollikon, and some trees are dangerous to them. Wilted red maple leaves are toxic to horses, and yew is poisonous to most livestock. If the memorial will stand near a pasture or fence line, ask a vet or the local extension office which species are safe for the animals that graze nearby.
Zollikon is home to about 13,000 people, the 3rd-largest of the 3 Zurich communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Zurich, about 3 miles (5 km) away, which is where some providers serving Zollikon are based.
Families in Zollikon often end up using a provider from Kusnacht (2 miles), Zurich (3 miles, a larger centre) and Lucerne (24 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Cremation, burial and green choices in Switzerland
With a human cremation rate near 90%[1], Switzerland has plenty of crematories competing for families, and that tends to show in the choice on offer. Ask more than one pet provider what they include. Some return ashes in a simple cardboard or paper tube, some add a wooden urn you may not want, and a few can quote for water cremation. The cheapest honest quote is usually the one you can plant from.
We take the Switzerland rate from bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Zollikon, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Choosing the right month to plant in Zollikon
One cautious approach in Zollikon: plant the memorial in a large pot for its first year and watch how it copes through your hottest and coldest weeks. If it thrives, move it into the ground the following autumn or spring, pot and all removed, with the ash blend around it. If it struggles, you've learned that before committing to a spot.

Price ranges for planting and water urns
Across Europe, pet cremation is priced by weight and bio urns are usually bought separately. In Germany, collective cremation is listed at about €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[5]. Only individual cremation returns your own pet's ashes, so choose it if you plan to plant. The table shows published European cremation prices; bio urns sold online are usually a modest extra.
The full price table by product is on our Zurich page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Rules worth knowing in Zurich before you scatter
If you live under a homeowners' association, a co-op board or a tenancy agreement in Zurich, its rules can matter more than any public law. Many restrict new trees, digging near shared pipes or heavy pots on balconies. A quick read of the rules, or one email to the manager, tells you whether a tree, a shrub bed or a container memorial is the right fit.
What to do first, and what can wait for the right season
- If you find your pet has died at home, move them gently onto a towel or blanket in the coolest room you have, and call your vet or a pet crematory. Many will collect or tell you where to bring them.
- Say you want individual cremation and that you plan to plant the ashes. That one sentence steers the provider away from communal options that return nothing.
- Keep the collar, a tag and a little fur while your pet is still with you at home. Later on they can be buried alongside the urn or tucked away in a keepsake box.
- Leave the memorial decisions for another week. Choosing a tree the same night is too much to ask of anyone.
- When the ashes arrive, open the box once to see the amount and the inner bag, then close it and store it somewhere dry.
- Use our [memorial tree finder](/tools/memorial-tree-finder) when the time feels right, then pencil in the planting for a quiet weekend during the proper season.
Ways to mark the spot and the date
In Switzerland cremation is the default for people, and communal memorial gardens are widely used for human ashes, so the idea carries over easily to pets. In a Zollikon apartment, a lacquered box, a plaster cast of a paw or a small capsule pendant fits easily on a shelf. In a garden near the forest edge, a granite stone or a newly planted shrub gives a place to stand and remember.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Zollikon actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Zurich, about 3 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Zollikon and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How do Switzerland attitudes to cremation compare?
bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) puts the Switzerland human cremation rate at about 90%[1]. We show it on the Zollikon page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Zollikon?
The closest communities we cover are Kusnacht (about 2 miles), Zurich (about 3 miles) and Lucerne (about 24 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Zollikon too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Which memorial plants are dangerous to cats and dogs?
Lilies are highly toxic to cats, even the pollen. Sago palm, oleander, yew, azalea and foxglove can poison dogs, and several of them harm cats and horses too. If you have pets at home in Zollikon, ask a vet or nursery to confirm a plant is safe before you buy it. Grasses, many herbs and most fruit trees are safer choices, though large amounts of fallen fruit can still upset a dog's stomach.
How long does it take to get ashes back for planting?
Most private cremations return ashes within one to two weeks, and water cremation cycles themselves take 12–20 hours[7], so allow a similar time. In a smaller place, if the cremation happens in a larger centre such as Zurich, it may take a little longer. Planting can wait, so there's no need to rush.
Will the seed in a tree urn grow?
Not always. Seeds from kits can fail to sprout if they weren't stored or chilled correctly, and alkaline soil around them makes it harder. A young tree from a nursery near Zollikon is far more reliable, and most planting urns work just as well with a sapling in the top chamber.
