Living memorials in Foley: the local picture
Retirees in Foley often have children and grandchildren spread across the country, so memorials that can be shared or shipped are useful. Small keepsakes, prints and paw impressions all travel easily. Before ordering, ask how much ash to expect for your pet's size, what engraving or photo work costs and how long delivery takes, and get the cremation and memorial priced together in writing.
Foley's yards are full of camellias, azaleas and palms, and many families want a memorial that fits a coastal garden: a stone among the shrubs, a planter by the lanai or a keepsake with a beach feel. Others keep ashes indoors. Because hurricanes can bring wind and flooding, an indoor memorial or one that's easy to lift and move may be the more practical choice here.
Most families in and around Foley arrange cremation through their local vet, who works with a regional crematory, and then do the memorial themselves. That's a good split. Bio urns ship by mail, and the local feed store, nursery or hardware store usually has the compost, pine bark and a pH kit you need. The one thing worth buying locally is the tree, because a nursery near you already knows what survives your winters and summers.
Foley is home to about 30,354 people, the 21st-largest of the 37 Alabama communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Foley are based about 30 miles away in Mobile, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
For a second opinion on price, Fairhope (15 miles), Daphne (20 miles) and Pensacola (29 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Foley routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
11,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Foley
How we calculated this
30,354 ÷ 2.5 = 12,142 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 11,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
930
dog and cat deaths per year in Foley, our estimate
How we calculated this
11,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 930 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Cremation habits in Alabama, and what they mean for a bio urn
Burial still dominates in Alabama, where the human cremation rate is about 42.3%[5], and for many families burying a pet whole feels natural. If you'd like a greener version of that, a shroud or basket made of natural fiber and a tree nearby is one way. If you'd rather cremate, a planting urn gives you a smaller, simpler burial. Either way, check local rules on burying animals before you dig.
We take the Alabama rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Foley, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
What Foley's climate means for a living memorial
Foley summers are hard on young trees: July averages highs around 91°F. Don't plant a memorial tree in the hottest months. Aim for the cooler part of the year, when roots can grow before the next summer arrives. Ashes don't need to go into the ground quickly, so keeping them safely at home for a few months is completely fine.
Summer water can be busy or unsafe in hot places. Around Foley, shorelines are crowded in July, and some lakes close for algae blooms in the heat. For a lake or river goodbye, pick a cooler month or go at first light, check for any water-quality notices, and choose a spot where you can reach the water easily without slipping.

Price ranges for planting and water urns
Bio urns vary more in price than you might expect. A national guide puts biodegradable urns at $70–$260[6], depending on material, size and whether a seed or tree system is included. For a lake or sea release, one water urn designed to float briefly and dissolve sells for $149[7]. In Foley, the tree and the soil amendments are usually the cheapest part of the whole memorial.

What Alabama allows for ashes, in general terms
If you live under a homeowners' association, a co-op board or a tenancy agreement in Alabama, its rules can matter more than any public law. Many restrict new trees, digging near shared pipes or heavy pots on balconies. A quick read of the rules, or one email to the manager, tells you whether a tree, a shrub bed or a container memorial is the right fit.

A simple plan for your pet's eco memorial
- If the ashes have been on a shelf for years, planting is still an option. Ashes don't degrade with age, so nothing has been missed.
- Open the container carefully somewhere sheltered from wind, and check whether the ashes are in a sealed bag inside.
- Weigh or measure what you have, and put the figure into our urn size calculator to find a planting or water urn of the right capacity.
- Decide whether to keep any back. After years at home, some families like to plant most of the ashes and keep a spoonful.
- Pick a date that carries meaning, such as the anniversary or your pet's birthday, and invite anyone who knew them.
- Treat the old urn kindly afterwards. Many people reuse a wooden or ceramic urn as a plant pot or keepsake box.
Remembering your pet in Foley
Between the Gulf beaches, Bon Secour Bay and the slow creeks west of town, water is part of how many Foley residents spend their time, and some want a final moment there. Before you take ashes out on a boat or onto a public beach, look up the rules for that place and for scattering at sea. Splitting ashes, so some stay home in an urn or keepsake, keeps options open for later.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Foley?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Where are the providers that serve Foley actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Mobile, about 30 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Foley and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is Foley big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 11,000 Foley households keep a dog or cat and around 930 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 30,354), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Foley?
The closest communities we cover are Fairhope (about 15 miles), Daphne (about 20 miles) and Pensacola (about 29 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Foley too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How long does it take to get ashes back for planting?
Most private cremations return ashes within one to two weeks, and water cremation cycles themselves take 12–20 hours[9], so allow a similar time. In a smaller place, if the cremation happens in a larger centre such as Mobile, it may take a little longer. Planting can wait, so there's no need to rush.
Can I scatter my pet's ashes in a park in Foley?
Usually only with permission, and some parks don't allow it at all. Parks are managed by a city, county, state or national agency, each with its own policy, and many were written for human ashes. Contact the park office, explain it's a small amount of pet ash, and ask whether there's a preferred spot.
