Growing something from the goodbye in Pasadena
By our estimate, around 50,000 households in Pasadena share their home with a dog or cat, and roughly 4,150 of those pets die each year. More of those families now ask about planting or water memorials. Here's how to do it well.
- A memorial that moves with you

Planning a greener goodbye in Pasadena
The Arroyo Seco, the foothill trails and the view of the San Gabriels give many Pasadena families places they connect with their pets. Some choose a biodegradable urn to plant a tree at home; others keep all the ashes indoors. Before scattering in the Angeles National Forest or on any land you do not own, check the rules and ask the managing authority. Keep a portion back for keepsakes.
Pasadena's homes range from apartments to bungalows with gardens, and memorial choices follow suit. A compact urn or framed paw print suits an apartment, while a stone or planted urn can sit among roses or native plants in a yard. After recent fires, some families prefer something portable they could carry out in an evacuation. Decide where the memory will live, then choose the object.
Dogs and some cats will dig into fresh soil, and a planting that holds bone ash smells interesting to them. For the first few months in Pasadena, cover the planted area with a ring of flat stones, a piece of wire mesh under the mulch or a short temporary fence. Once the ground settles and the smell fades, most pets lose interest.
Pasadena is home to about 135,804 people, the 43rd-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Los Angeles, about 9 miles (14 km) away, which is where some providers serving Pasadena are based.
For a second opinion on price, South Pasadena (3 miles), Alhambra (4 miles) and San Gabriel (5 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Pasadena routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
50,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Pasadena has (estimate)
How we calculated this
135,804 ÷ 2.5 = 54,322 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 50,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
4,150
Estimated dog and cat losses in Pasadena each year
How we calculated this
50,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 4,150 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Cremation habits in California, and what they mean for a bio urn
With roughly 70.5%[5] of people in California cremated, the local funeral culture leans firmly toward ashes rather than graves. That has a practical upside for a living memorial. Nurseries, crematories and even some parks departments are used to questions about ashes, and you'll usually get a straight answer. It's still worth asking before you plant or scatter anywhere you don't own, because common practice isn't the same as permission.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the California figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Pasadena tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Choosing the right month to plant in Pasadena
Pasadena summers are hard on young trees: August averages highs around 91°F. Don't plant a memorial tree in the hottest months. Aim for the cooler part of the year, when roots can grow before the next summer arrives. Ashes don't need to go into the ground quickly, so keeping them safely at home for a few months is completely fine.
In a hot climate like Pasadena's, with highs of about 91°F in August, salt is a bigger problem than in wetter places. Rain is what washes sodium from ashes down past the roots, and dry heat lets it build up near the surface. Mix the ashes through a much larger volume of soil and compost than you'd think necessary, and water deeply and slowly after planting so salts move down, not up.

What a greener goodbye costs in Pasadena
The container the ashes come back in can quietly add to the bill. One Virginia crematory, for example, sells private cremation at $189 with a temporary container and $225 with a wooden urn[6]. If you're planting, the plain option is all you need. Wooden pet urns alone run about $30–$150[7] in one national guide, money that could buy a good tree for your Pasadena garden instead.

Scattering and planting rules in California
Natural burial grounds and some pet cemeteries in California accept ashes in biodegradable urns, and a few ask for nothing else: no plastic, no metal, no varnish. If you're considering one, ask what the urn may be made of, whether a tree or marker is allowed above it, and whether the fee includes looking after the plot.
To find your county or city office in California, start with the official California local government directory.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the California level first; our California rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Pasadena or your HOA adds anything.
What to do first, and what can wait for the right season
- If euthanasia is planned, ask the vet a few days ahead which crematory they use and whether water cremation is one of the choices.
- Book the aftercare before the appointment, so on the day itself you only have to be with your pet.
- Ask for a paw print or nose print ahead of the cremation if you want one; once it's done there's no way to make one.
- Choose the plant in advance when that feels easier. Knowing the exact spot their pet is headed for brings some families real comfort.
- Skip the display urn. The basic tube or box the crematory supplies does the job for planting, and whatever you don't spend can buy a better tree or shrub.
- Prepare the soil blend while you wait for the crematory to return the ashes, and the planting can happen within a few months instead of slipping year after year.
Remembering your pet, in Pasadena and wherever you go next
Paw prints, nose prints and fur clippings can only be taken before cremation, so ask about them at the start. In families spread across Southern California and beyond, dividing ashes lets several people keep something: a mini urn, a pendant or a small vial. Engraving and stones can be ordered later. A small portion kept aside also gives you options if plans change.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in California?
For people, yes: about 70.5%[5] of California deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Pasadena follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Los Angeles to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Los Angeles (roughly 9 miles from Pasadena) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Pasadena?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How many pet owners live in Pasadena?
By our estimate, about 50,000 households in Pasadena have at least one dog or cat, and around 4,150 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 135,804, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
How much ash will my pet leave, and will it fit a bio urn?
Cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[9], so a cat returns a few ounces and a large dog several pounds. Many planting kits are designed for a set volume, and a big dog's ashes may not all fit. Use our urn size calculator, and plan to mix any extra into the wider planting bed or keep it for a second memorial.
Is there water cremation for pets near Pasadena?
It depends on whether a provider nearby has invested in the equipment. Smaller places rarely have their own, but some aquamation providers in larger centres such as Los Angeles collect from vets across a wide area. Ask your vet whether they work with one. If not, a flame cremation followed by a bio urn still gives you a living memorial.
