Bio urns, trees and water in Windsor
Spring hail, strong summer sun and hard winters all take a toll on outdoor memorials in Windsor. Heavy stone and bronze last; glass, thin ceramic and resin tend to crack within a few seasons. For a memorial tree, a hardy northern Colorado species such as a hackberry or bur oak, planted after the last spring frost and watered deeply during dry spells, stands the best chance of thriving for decades.
After the 2008 tornado stripped many of Windsor's older trees, residents rebuilt homes and replanted streets, and plenty of families here value memorials that grow: a tree, a perennial bed, a small garden with a plaque. Others prefer an urn in the house or a pendant carrying a little ash. Take the time you need; a planting can always be added in a later spring.
Country land around Windsor gives you options city families don't have, and a few extra things to think about. Keep ash plantings well away from wells, springs and streams, and away from ground where livestock graze or crops are grown. Choose a spot with some shelter from wind for a young tree, and remember that deer and rabbits find new plantings quickly; a simple tree guard or wire cage for the first few years can make all the difference.
Windsor's population is around 43,840, the 22nd-largest of the 36 Colorado communities we cover. Denver, roughly 51 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Windsor run from there.
Families in Windsor often end up using a provider from Greeley (9 miles, a larger centre), Loveland (10 miles) and Fort Collins (12 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
16,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Windsor
How we calculated this
43,840 ÷ 2.5 = 17,536 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 16,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,350
Estimated dog and cat losses in Windsor each year
How we calculated this
16,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,350 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

What local attitudes to cremation mean in Colorado
Scattering gardens and woodland memorials are familiar sights in Colorado, where cremation is the choice for around 77.4%[5] of people who die. Many families already have a place where a grandparent's ashes were scattered. If that place is on land you own or have permission to use, a pet's ashes can join it quietly. Human cemeteries and crematoria grounds are different, and most don't accept animal remains, so ask first.
The Colorado figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
When to plant in Windsor's climate
Early spring in Windsor is when nurseries sell bare-root trees, often at a lower price than trees in pots. They need planting quickly, as soon as the ground can be dug after January, February, March, November and December, which fits well with ashes that have waited through the winter. Have the soil blend ready beforehand, soak the roots for an hour, and plant on a calm, overcast day.
Freezing and thawing through January, February, March, November and December can heave a newly planted tree out of the ground in Windsor. If you plant in autumn, mulch well after the first frost to keep the soil temperature steady, and check the base of the tree in spring. A spring planting avoids the problem entirely and gives roots a full growing season before the next winter.

What bio urns and aquamation cost in Windsor
A living memorial in Windsor has two costs: the cremation and the urn. Biodegradable pet urns are among the cheaper urns you can buy, listed at about $15–$80[6] in one national price guide, and a sapling from a local nursery often costs less than a decorative display urn. If you'd like water cremation, one pet insurer's guide lists aquamation at $80 to $450 depending on size[7]. The table shows published examples.

Rules worth knowing in Colorado before you scatter
Rules about ashes were mostly written for people, and pet ashes often sit in a grey area. That's a reason to ask, not a reason to assume. On land you own, planting or burying ashes is generally fine. Anywhere else in Colorado, from parks to beaches to a friend's field, the land manager or owner decides, so ask first.

How to plan a living memorial, in order
- Decide what the memorial is for. Wanting somewhere to sit, a living plant, a release on water or simply the gentlest footprint each leads you toward a different kind of urn.
- If a greener cremation matters, ask about aquamation before anything else; it's the step with the biggest environmental difference.
- Keep a small portion back in a keepsake if there's any chance you'll move or want a second planting later.
- Buy the tree locally. A young native tree from a grower around Windsor tends to outgrow anything sprouted from a packet seed.
- Prepare the soil a season ahead if the timing allows, so the ash and compost blend is ready on planting day.
- Plant with the people who loved your pet; hand everyone a task of their own, whether blending, backfilling or watering.
Keeping your pet's memory growing in Windsor
Windsor's newer neighborhoods often have covenants about front-yard features, but backyards usually offer space for a small memorial: a stone set among the perennials, a bench, a young tree. On acreage, families sometimes choose a boulder turned up from their own fields and add a simple engraved plaque. Indoors, an urn, a pawprint frame or a shadow box can sit in any room.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Colorado?
For people, yes: about 77.4%[5] of Colorado deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Windsor follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Does the Windsor climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 88°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Roughly how many pets die in Windsor each year?
Our estimate is around 1,350. It comes from Windsor's population (about 43,840), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 16,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Windsor?
The closest communities we cover are Greeley (about 9 miles), Loveland (about 10 miles) and Fort Collins (about 12 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Windsor too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How much does a bio urn cost in Windsor?
Biodegradable pet urns are listed at about $15–$80[6] in one US price guide, and a wider guide puts them at $70–$260[9] depending on size and features. A seed-capsule urn for pets sells for about $99[10]. The cremation is a separate, larger cost, so ask Windsor providers for the ashes in a plain container if you plan to plant.
How do I stop my other dog digging up the memorial?
Fresh soil with bone ash in it is interesting to dogs. Lay a piece of wire mesh just under the mulch, surround the planting with flat stones, or put up a short temporary fence for the first few months. Walk your dog past the spot on a lead a few times so it becomes familiar. Interest usually fades once the soil settles.
