A living memorial for your pet in Christmas
Christmas has an estimated 370 dog- or cat-owning households. When a planting or water memorial feels right for yours, here's what works in the local climate and what to ask before you buy.

Where a living memorial fits in Christmas
Christmas residents usually shop for memorials in Orlando, Titusville or online, since there are few local stores. A cremation urn, garden stone, piece of jewelry or framed paw print can be chosen weeks after the loss. The one thing that must be done promptly is making a clay print or saving a tuft of fur, which needs your pet's body at home. Delivery to east Orange County is usually quick.
The rural lots around Christmas offer plenty of space for an outdoor memorial, but strong sun and summer rain are tough on materials. Granite and heavy cast stone last longest, especially when set on a gravel base and placed in an open spot. Wood and painted finishes fade quickly, so they're better kept on a covered porch. Check it after big storms for tilting.
Small towns tend to have long memories, and a memorial tree in Christmas is often planted with a lot of history around it: the same yard for decades, a family farm, a favorite fishing spot. If the land is likely to stay in the family, a long-lived native tree is a lovely choice. If it might be sold, consider a shrub bed, a portion of ashes kept back, or a water release that doesn't depend on who owns the ground in twenty years.
Christmas is home to about 1,000 people, the 221st-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Orlando, roughly 22 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Christmas run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Bithlo (6 miles, a larger centre), Wedgefield (6 miles, a larger centre) and Avalon Park (9 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Christmas routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
370
Christmas: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
1,000 ÷ 2.5 = 400 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 370. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
30
dog and cat deaths per year in Christmas, our estimate
How we calculated this
370 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 30 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Cremation, burial and green choices in Florida
Cremation is the usual choice for people in Florida: about 72.5%[5] of those who die there are cremated. That figure is about people, not pets, but it tells you something useful. Where cremation is ordinary, families already think about what to do with ashes, and planting or scattering is a familiar next step. You're less likely to have to explain a bio urn to relatives, and more likely to find a crematory nearby that returns ashes promptly.
That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Christmas only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Weather, soil and planting windows in Christmas
Christmas summers are hard on young trees: July averages highs around 90°F. Don't plant a memorial tree in the hottest months. Aim for the cooler part of the year, when roots can grow before the next summer arrives. Ashes don't need to go into the ground quickly, so keeping them safely at home for a few months is completely fine.
In a hot climate like Christmas's, with highs of about 90°F in July, salt is a bigger problem than in wetter places. Rain is what washes sodium from ashes down past the roots, and dry heat lets it build up near the surface. Mix the ashes through a much larger volume of soil and compost than you'd think necessary, and water deeply and slowly after planting so salts move down, not up.

What a greener goodbye costs in Christmas
Add up every part before you commit. Beyond the cremation, a living memorial in Christmas can include the bio urn, compost and bark, a pH kit, the tree or shrub, a guard against deer or rabbits, and perhaps a marker. Our memorial budget planner lists each line so nothing surprises you. Most families find the tree is the cheapest part and the cremation the most expensive.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Florida: Florida costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules worth knowing in Florida before you scatter
Two questions cover most situations in Florida: who owns or manages this land or water, and have they said yes? For your own garden, the answer is you. For a rented home, it's your landlord, in writing. For parks and public water, it's the relevant agency. For a relative's garden, it's them, and it's worth agreeing that the tree stays even if the house is sold.
Not sure which office covers Christmas? The Florida local government directory is the official list.
We keep Florida's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Florida rules summary. Before a home burial in Christmas, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
A simple plan for your pet's eco memorial
- Take your time. Nothing about a bio urn is urgent. Arrange cremation first and collect the ashes when they're ready; planting can wait weeks or months.
- Ask for individual cremation, by flame or by water, so you know the ashes going into the ground are your pet's alone. A plain box is enough when a display urn isn't part of the plan.
- Check how much ash you have. Many kits are sized for a set volume, and a large dog's ashes may not all fit.
- Choose the place and the tree together. Think about sun, space, underground pipes and whether you'll still live there in ten years.
- Mix, don't layer. Work the ashes evenly into plenty of soil and compost, give it a few weeks to settle where possible, and check the pH.
- Plant in the right season, whatever that is in Christmas, soak the roots and mulch a wide circle.
- Mark the spot using a modest stone or a garden tag, and write the planting date down where it won't get lost.
Keeping the memorial alive in Christmas
Planting a tree above a biodegradable urn feels natural on the open land around Christmas. A live oak, a southern red cedar or a cabbage palm all fit the local landscape and handle wet and dry spells. For a keepsake you can take anywhere, set aside a little ash in a pendant or mini urn, so the tree and the keepsake together tell the story.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Christmas?
The closest communities we cover are Bithlo (about 6 miles), Wedgefield (about 6 miles) and Avalon Park (about 9 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Christmas too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Roughly how many pets die in Christmas each year?
Our estimate is around 30. It comes from Christmas's population (about 1,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 370 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Where are the providers that serve Christmas actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Orlando, about 22 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Christmas and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[5] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Christmas follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How long does a water-soluble urn take to dissolve?
Most are made from salt, sand, paper or gelatin and dissolve within minutes to hours once they sink. Some float briefly first, long enough for a few words: one maker's water urn floats for several minutes before dissolving[7]. Calm water gives the best result, so check the forecast for wind before you go.
When is the best time to plant a memorial tree in Christmas?
Avoid the hottest months. In a hot climate, the cooler part of the year gives roots time to grow before the next summer. Keep the ashes safely at home until then, use the time to prepare the soil mix, and plant a sturdy nursery sapling rather than a seed, which is a gamble in serious heat.
