Hobe Sound, Florida
Bio urns, trees and water in Hobe Sound
Hobe Sound sits beside some of the least developed coast in South Florida, including Jonathan Dickinson State Park along the Loxahatchee River and the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge. Families here often want memorials that echo that wild setting: a boulder among native plants, a wooden birdhouse, or an urn of natural clay. Scattering inside a state park or refuge requires permission, so ask the managers first.
Many Hobe Sound residents live here part of the year or have children and grandchildren in distant states. A main urn at home, with a few small vials or pendants sent to relatives, lets everyone hold a share. Cremation is the usual choice for Floridians now, so keeping remains at home is widely accepted, and the final plan can wait until the family is ready.
Deliveries can take longer to reach a place like Hobe Sound, and bio urns, water urns and mail-order saplings are no exception. Order the urn soon after you decide, rather than the week before the planting. If a nursery nearby carries hardy local trees, buy there instead, and check the root ball: a healthy tree has firm, pale roots that aren't circling tightly in the pot.
With roughly 12,000 residents, Hobe Sound is the 152nd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Port St. Lucie, roughly 20 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Hobe Sound run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Port Salerno (7 miles), Sewall's Point (10 miles) and Stuart (12 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Hobe Sound too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
4,400
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Hobe Sound
How we calculated this
12,000 ÷ 2.5 = 4,800 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 4,400. A household with several pets counts once.

What local attitudes to cremation mean in Florida
With a human cremation rate near 72.5%[5], Florida has plenty of crematories competing for families, and that tends to show in the choice on offer. Ask more than one pet provider what they include. Some return ashes in a simple cardboard or paper tube, some add a wooden urn you may not want, and a few can quote for water cremation. The cheapest honest quote is usually the one you can plant from.

Choosing the right month to plant in Hobe Sound
If you're unsure what grows in Hobe Sound, visit a public park, a botanic garden or a cemetery with old trees and see which species look healthy after decades. Those are proven in local weather and soil. Take photos of the labels, or of the leaves and bark, and ask a nursery whether a smaller relative would suit your garden.

What bio urns and aquamation cost in Hobe Sound
Water cremation prices overlap with flame cremation. One Delaware provider charges $150–$450[6] for private aquamation by weight, including a standard urn, and $50–$225[7] for communal. That makes private about 2.5 times the shared price[8]. Prices in Hobe Sound depend on who offers it locally, so ask for a written quote that says whether the ashes come back and in what container.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Florida: Florida costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Who to ask before you plant or scatter in Florida
Rules about ashes were mostly written for people, and pet ashes often sit in a grey area. That's a reason to ask, not a reason to assume. On land you own, planting or burying ashes is generally fine. Anywhere else in Florida, from parks to beaches to a friend's field, the land manager or owner decides, so ask first.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Hobe Sound may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
How to plan a living memorial, in order
- Take your time. Nothing about a bio urn is urgent. Arrange cremation first and collect the ashes when they're ready; planting can wait weeks or months.
- Ask for individual cremation, flame or water, so the ashes you plant are your pet's own. Ask for them in a plain container if you won't keep a display urn.
- Check how much ash you have. Most kits hold a fixed amount, so the remains of a big dog can overflow what the urn was designed for.
- Choose the place and the tree together. Weigh up light, room to spread, buried pipes or cables, and whether you're likely to be at that address a decade from now.
- Mix, don't layer. Blend the ashes through plenty of compost and soil, let the mix rest if you can and test the pH.
- Plant in the right season for Hobe Sound, water deeply and mulch a wide ring around the base.
- Mark the spot using a modest stone or a garden tag, and write the planting date down where it won't get lost.
Ways to mark the spot and the date
Strong sun, humidity and salty air can age outdoor memorials within a few seasons in southern Martin County. Stone and glazed ceramic endure where wood and thin metal fade. A memorial tree suited to sandy coastal soil, such as a gumbo limbo, a sea grape or a Simpson's stopper, will need regular watering through the long dry winter and spring before summer rains arrive.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Port St. Lucie to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Port St. Lucie (roughly 20 miles from Hobe Sound) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[5]. We show it on the Hobe Sound page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Roughly how many pets die in Hobe Sound each year?
Our estimate is around 370. It comes from Hobe Sound's population (about 12,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 4,400 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hobe Sound?
Usually yes. Port Salerno is about 7 miles away, Sewall's Point is about 10 miles away and Stuart is about 12 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is it legal to release pet ashes in the sea or a river?
Rules differ by place and by who manages the water, and many were written for human remains. In general, avoid drinking-water reservoirs, busy swimming areas and places where anglers gather, use a water-soluble urn or loose ashes only, and let nothing plastic float away. Ask the relevant agency or landowner before the day.
How much does pet aquamation cost?
One US pet insurer's guide lists aquamation at $80 to $450 depending on size[10]. As a real example, a Delaware provider charges $150–$450[6] for private aquamation by weight, including a standard urn, and $50–$225[7] for communal. Prices in Hobe Sound depend on who offers it, so ask for a written total.
