Bio urns, trees and water in Avon
In Avon's newer neighborhoods, homeowners associations often limit what goes in a yard, so many families lean toward something indoors: a nameplate beneath a portrait, a small carved chest, or a shadow box that holds the collar and tags. If yard features are allowed, a flat stone at the edge of a flower bed is discreet. Nothing needs to be chosen quickly.
Avon families often have relatives spread across the Indianapolis suburbs and beyond, so sharing a memory is common. A handful of tiny urns, a locket or bracelet that holds a little ash, or a framed nose print for each household can all be arranged. Nose and paw prints, like fur snippets, depend on having the body, so request them at the outset.
Small towns tend to have long memories, and a memorial tree in Avon is often planted with a lot of history around it: the same yard for decades, a family farm, a favorite fishing spot. If the land is likely to stay in the family, a long-lived native tree is a lovely choice. If it might be sold, consider a shrub bed, a portion of ashes kept back, or a water release that doesn't depend on who owns the ground in twenty years.
Avon is home to about 25,350 people, the 41st-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Avon are based about 12 miles away in Indianapolis, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Families in Avon often end up using a provider from Plainfield (5 miles), Brownsburg (5 miles) and Indianapolis (13 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
9,350
How many dog- or cat-owning households Avon has (estimate)
How we calculated this
25,350 ÷ 2.5 = 10,140 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 9,350. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
780
dog and cat deaths per year in Avon, our estimate
How we calculated this
9,350 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 780 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]

Cremation, burial and green choices in Indiana
About 56.5%[5] of people in Indiana are cremated, which puts it in the middle: cremation is common, but so is burial. For pets, that often means families weigh a planting urn against a whole-body burial in the yard. Both can grow a tree. The planting urn takes less space and can go almost anywhere; a whole-body grave needs more depth and distance from water, and the tree should go beside it rather than directly on top.
That Indiana rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Avon only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Choosing the right month to plant in Avon
Water releases need open water, and in Avon lakes and ponds may ice over around January. Never walk out onto ice to release an urn. If a lake or river was your pet's place, plan the release for spring or summer, when the shoreline is safe and a water-soluble urn can float and dissolve as it's meant to. Keep the ashes at home until then.
In places like Avon, driveways and sidewalks are often salted in January, February and December. Ashes already add sodium to the soil, and road salt splashed onto the same bed doubles the load. Keep a memorial planting well back from salted paths and the edge of the road, and away from where snow gets piled. A spot uphill from the drive is better than one downhill of it.

Eco memorial prices, from urn to tree
The container the ashes come back in can quietly add to the bill. One Virginia crematory, for example, sells private cremation at $189 with a temporary container and $225 with a wooden urn[6]. If you're planting, the plain option is all you need. Wooden pet urns alone run about $30–$150[7] in one national guide, money that could buy a good tree for your Avon garden instead.

What Indiana allows for ashes, in general terms
Carrying ashes from one place to another is usually simple, but keep the paperwork. The certificate or letter from the crematory shows what's in the container, which helps if you're crossing borders, flying out of Indiana or handing the ashes to a cemetery. Keep a copy with the ashes and another somewhere safe at home.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Indiana level first; our Indiana rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Avon or your HOA adds anything.
A simple plan for your pet's eco memorial
- Decide what the memorial is for. A place to visit, something growing, a return to water or a lower-impact goodbye each point to a different choice.
- If a greener cremation matters, ask about aquamation before anything else; it's the step with the biggest environmental difference.
- Keep a small portion back in a keepsake in case a house move or a second memorial is on the cards down the line.
- Buy the tree locally. A young native tree from a grower around Avon tends to outgrow anything sprouted from a packet seed.
- Prepare the soil a season ahead where you can, and the mixture of compost and ash will have settled by the time you dig the hole.
- Plant with the people who loved your pet; hand everyone a task of their own, whether blending, backfilling or watering.
Remembering your pet, in Avon and wherever you go next
Hendricks County's freeze-thaw winters crack cheap outdoor pieces within a few years. If you place a marker outside, go with granite or bronze on a leveled gravel base, and keep it clear of the driveway and sidewalk where snow gets thrown and salt accumulates. Next to a patio or back step, it stays visible from the kitchen window and easy to tend in spring.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Indianapolis to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Indianapolis (roughly 12 miles from Avon) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Avon climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 85°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How many pet owners live in Avon?
By our estimate, about 9,350 households in Avon have at least one dog or cat, and around 780 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 25,350, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Avon?
Usually yes. Plainfield is about 5 miles away, Brownsburg is about 5 miles away and Indianapolis is about 13 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How long does it take to get ashes back for planting?
Most private cremations return ashes within one to two weeks, and water cremation cycles themselves take 12–20 hours[9], so allow a similar time. In a smaller place, if the cremation happens in a larger centre such as Indianapolis, it may take a little longer. Planting can wait, so there's no need to rush.
Can I plant my pet's ashes in winter in Avon?
Not usually, if the ground is frozen. Keep the ashes indoors until spring, when the soil has thawed and drained, or plant in early autumn with several weeks of open ground before hard frosts. Winter is a good time to mix the ashes with compost in a covered tub and let the blend rest before planting.
