Planning a greener goodbye in Clive
Splitting ashes is common when grown children live around the metro and beyond. A set of small keepsake urns, a small locket of ash, or a pawprint pressed in plaster lets each person keep something. Plenty of families also frame a photo taken along the Greenbelt or in the backyard to sit beside the urn. Before paying any memorial maker, see a proof and confirm what the finished piece will cost.
Anything placed outdoors in Clive has to survive humid summers, freeze-thaw cycles and snow cover from roughly November to March. Granite, cast bronze and fired ceramic hold up well; softwood and cheap resin crack or fade within a few seasons. Thinking about a tree urn? Plan to plant in April or May, after the soil has warmed and the risk of a hard frost has passed.
Getting a bio urn in Clive is mostly a matter of ordering online, but getting the soil right is a local job. Ask a nursery or your county extension office whether the ground is chalky, clay or sandy. Clay holds salts near the roots and drains poorly, so dig a wider hole and mix in more compost. Sandy soil drains well but holds little, so water the young tree more often in its first summers.
Clive is home to about 19,861 people, the 27th-largest of the 27 Iowa communities we cover. Des Moines, roughly 9 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Clive run from there.
Clive sits within easy reach of Urbandale (2 miles, a larger centre), West Des Moines (4 miles, a larger centre) and Waukee (5 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Clive; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
7,300
Clive: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
19,861 ÷ 2.5 = 7,944 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 7,300. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
610
dog and cat deaths per year in Clive, our estimate
How we calculated this
7,300 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 610 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

The local attitude to ashes and memorials
About 63.6%[5] of people in Iowa are cremated, which puts it in the middle: cremation is common, but so is burial. For pets, that often means families weigh a planting urn against a whole-body burial in the yard. Both can grow a tree. The planting urn takes less space and can go almost anywhere; a whole-body grave needs more depth and distance from water, and the tree should go beside it rather than directly on top.
That Iowa rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Clive only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons, soil and weather for a memorial in Clive
Cold winters narrow the choice of tree in Clive, where January lows average about 14°F. Pick species that are fully hardy locally: native trees, or ornamentals a nearby nursery rates for your zone. A tender tree from a warmer region may survive one mild winter and die in the next. Hardy flowering shrubs are a good fallback if you have less space.
A Clive winter is a useful waiting room. With 5 months of freezing lows, you can mix the ashes with compost in a covered bin or tub in a garage or shed during the cold months and let the mix rest. One gardening guide suggests at least 90–120 days[6] before planting, which fits neatly between a winter loss and spring planting. Test the pH before the tree goes in.

What a greener goodbye costs in Clive
A living memorial in Clive has two costs: the cremation and the urn. Biodegradable pet urns are among the cheaper urns you can buy, listed at about $15–$80[7] in one national price guide, and a sapling from a local nursery often costs less than a decorative display urn. If you'd like water cremation, one pet insurer's guide lists aquamation at $80 to $450 depending on size[8]. The table shows published examples.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Iowa: Iowa costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Land, water and permission in Iowa
If you live under a homeowners' association, a co-op board or a tenancy agreement in Iowa, its rules can matter more than any public law. Many restrict new trees, digging near shared pipes or heavy pots on balconies. A quick read of the rules, or one email to the manager, tells you whether a tree, a shrub bed or a container memorial is the right fit.
Iowa keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Clive.
For Iowa's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Iowa guide. Local rules in Clive can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Your next steps, whatever your situation
- Take your time. Nothing about a bio urn is urgent. Arrange cremation first and collect the ashes when they're ready; planting can wait weeks or months.
- Ask for individual cremation, by flame or by water, so you know the ashes going into the ground are your pet's alone. A plain box is enough when a display urn isn't part of the plan.
- Check how much ash you have. Many kits are sized for a set volume, and a large dog's ashes may not all fit.
- Choose the place and the tree together. Weigh up light, room to spread, buried pipes or cables, and whether you're likely to be at that address a decade from now.
- Mix, don't layer. Blend the ashes through plenty of compost and soil, let the mix rest if you can and test the pH.
- Plant in the right season, whatever that is in Clive, soak the roots and mulch a wide circle.
- Mark the spot with a small stone or plant label, and note the date somewhere you'll find it.
Remembering your pet in Clive
Newer houses in Clive tend to have open living areas, wide mantels and backyard patios, which gives you choices about where a keepsake lives. Some families keep an urn indoors near a favorite window; others prefer a flat stone by the patio or a potted shrub that can move with them if they relocate. The temporary container from the crematory is perfectly fine for months.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Des Moines to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Des Moines (roughly 9 miles from Clive) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Clive climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 86°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Clive?
Usually yes. Urbandale is about 2 miles away, West Des Moines is about 4 miles away and Waukee is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is Clive big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 7,300 Clive households keep a dog or cat and around 610 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 19,861), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
How much does a bio urn cost in Clive?
Biodegradable pet urns are listed at about $15–$80[7] in one US price guide, and a wider guide puts them at $70–$260[10] depending on size and features. A seed-capsule urn for pets sells for about $99[11]. The cremation is a separate, larger cost, so ask Clive providers for the ashes in a plain container if you plan to plant.
Can I release my pet's ashes in a lake near Clive in winter?
Only if the water is open and safe to reach. Never walk onto ice to release an urn. Many families in cold places keep the ashes at home and plan the release for spring or summer, when a water-soluble urn can float and dissolve as intended. Check who manages the lake before you go.
