Elko, Nevada
Planning a greener goodbye in Elko
Cold winters, blazing summer sun and dry wind take a toll on anything left outdoors in northeast Nevada. Choose granite or fieldstone, which weather for decades, over resin and painted pieces that peel. Bed the marker on tamped gravel so frost can't tip it. Glass, ceramic and wooden keepsakes last longest on a shelf indoors, away from the weather and the dust.
Memorials in Elko often reflect the town's ranching and Basque heritage: a granite marker on the ranch, a hand-tooled leather box or small urn on the mantel, a silver keepsake worn every day, maybe engraved with a brand. No decision is needed right away. The crematory's temporary box is sturdy, so families can wait until relatives come home or the snow melts.
In rural areas around Elko, family pets are sometimes buried whole on the property rather than cremated. If you'd prefer that, check local rules on depth and distance from water. If you'd like a tree above the grave, plant it beside the grave, not directly on it, so the roots aren't disturbed and the ground can settle. For cremated pets, a planting urn gives you the tree without a large grave, and it can be placed exactly where you want.
With roughly 21,019 residents, Elko is the 9th-largest of the 11 Nevada communities we cover.

How many dog- or cat-owning households Elko has (estimate)
How we calculated this
21,019 ÷ 2.5 = 8,408 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 7,750. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate

How we calculated this
7,750 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 640 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

How Nevada feels about cremation
Scattering gardens and woodland memorials are familiar sights in Nevada, where cremation is the choice for around 80.7%[5] of people who die. Many families already have a place where a grandparent's ashes were scattered. If that place is on land you own or have permission to use, a pet's ashes can join it quietly. Human cemeteries and crematoria grounds are different, and most don't accept animal remains, so ask first.
We take the Nevada rate from Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Elko, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Elko seasons and your memorial tree
Trees in Elko have to survive hot summers and freezing winters, which rules out many species sold in planting kits. Ask a local nursery for trees proven in both conditions; natives are usually the safest choice. Plant a sapling rather than a seed, mulch a wide ring to keep the roots cooler in July and August and steadier through the freeze, and water deeply during dry spells for two summers.
With freezing lows in January, February, March, April, October, November and December and hot months like July and August, an Elko memorial planting has a short list of good days. If a pet dies in midsummer or midwinter, keep the ashes at home and use the wait well: mix them with compost and let the blend rest, test the pH, and choose the tree. By the time the season turns, everything is ready and the planting day can be calm.

Price ranges for planting and water urns
Water cremation prices overlap with flame cremation. One Delaware provider charges $150–$450[6] for private aquamation by weight, including a standard urn, and $50–$225[7] for communal. That makes private about 2.5 times the shared price[8]. Prices in Elko depend on who offers it locally, so ask for a written quote that says whether the ashes come back and in what container.
We keep the detailed Nevada price table on one page so it stays current: see Nevada prices.

Rules worth knowing in Nevada before you scatter
Natural burial grounds and some pet cemeteries in Nevada accept ashes in biodegradable urns, and a few ask for nothing else: no plastic, no metal, no varnish. If you're considering one, ask what the urn may be made of, whether a tree or marker is allowed above it, and whether the fee includes looking after the plot.
The official Nevada local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Elko.
The Nevada page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Elko's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Planting a memorial in Elko, step by step
- If you're remembering more than one animal, settle at the start on one shared planting or separate ones. Either works, but once the ashes are combined there's no undoing it.
- Label each container clearly with the name and date as it comes back, especially if the ashes return months or years apart.
- Choose a bigger planting area for several sets of ashes: a hedge, a group of shrubs or a small orchard spreads the mineral load across more soil.
- Keep a spoonful of each in its own keepsake, so a family member who was closest to one particular pet has something just for them.
- Plan for the pets still living with you. A new planting that smells of bone attracts diggers, so protect it for the first few months.
- Add a marker for each name, or one stone that lists them all, so visitors know who the planting is for.
Remembering your pet in Elko
Mining jobs bring people to Elko from all over, and many families have relatives scattered across the West. Splitting up the ashes means a small urn can go to one person, jewelry to another, and a portion can be saved for the ranch or a canyon in the Rubies. Providers can usually prepare separate containers if you ask when booking.

Questions people ask
Is Elko big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 7,750 Elko households keep a dog or cat and around 640 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 21,019), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
How do Nevada attitudes to cremation compare?
Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) puts the Nevada human cremation rate at about 80.7%[5]. We show it on the Elko page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Does the Elko climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, April, October, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How much does a bio urn cost in Elko?
Biodegradable pet urns are listed at about $15–$80[10] in one US price guide, and a wider guide puts them at $70–$260[11] depending on size and features. A seed-capsule urn for pets sells for about $99[12]. The cremation is a separate, larger cost, so ask Elko providers for the ashes in a plain container if you plan to plant.
How many dogs and cats are there in Elko?
By our estimate, about 7,750 households in Elko have a dog or a cat, and around 640 of those pets die each year. We calculate this from the city's population, average household size and national pet ownership and lifespan figures. The method is shown on this page, and the real number of animals is higher.
How do I keep a memorial tree alive in the Elko heat?
Choose a drought-tolerant species that already grows well locally, plant in the cooler months, and water deeply and slowly rather than little and often, so salts from the ashes move down past the roots. A wide ring of mulch keeps the soil cooler. Expect to water through the first two summers.
