What an eco memorial looks like in Van
There is no need to pick a permanent memorial the week your pet dies. Providers return ashes in a simple temporary container that can rest in a closet or cabinet for months without harm. Many families in Van wait until the first raw weeks pass, then decide whether they want an urn, a garden stone, a piece of jewelry or a mix of small keepsakes.
Choosing the words for an engraving can take longer than choosing the memorial itself. A name and years are enough, but some Van families add a nickname, a line from a hymn or a short phrase the whole household used. Keep it brief so it can be read at a glance, and ask to approve a proof before anything is cut or etched.
Most families in and around Van arrange cremation through their local vet, who works with a regional crematory, and then do the memorial themselves. That's a good split. Bio urns ship by mail, and the local feed store, nursery or hardware store usually has the compost, pine bark and a pH kit you need. The one thing worth buying locally is the tree, because a nursery near you already knows what survives your winters and summers.
With roughly 2,993 residents, Van is the 272nd-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Garland, roughly 64 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Van run from there.
Van sits within easy reach of Hideaway (11 miles), Mineola (13 miles) and Lindale (13 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Van; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
1,100
Van: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
2,993 ÷ 2.5 = 1,197 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 1,100. A household with several pets counts once.

How we calculated this
1,100 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 90 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

How Texas feels about cremation
Cremation and burial are both familiar in Texas, where about 55.7%[5] of people are cremated. For many families that means a pet's aftercare starts with a question of tradition: bury in the yard as earlier generations did, or cremate and keep the ashes. A bio urn sits happily between the two. It returns the ashes to the earth like a burial, but without a large grave, and it can be planted in a spot you choose later.
The Texas figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
When to plant in Van's climate
Hot weather in Van changes the plan for a planting ceremony too. With August highs near 94°F, an outdoor gathering at midday is uncomfortable and stressful for the new plant. Choose an early morning or evening in a cooler month, set out shade and water for guests, and water the tree in well straight after planting. A light, pale mulch helps keep the root zone cool.
Biodegradable urns are made to break down, and heat and humidity can start that early. In Van, where August highs average about 94°F, keep a paper, cornstarch or coconut-fiber urn indoors, somewhere cool and dry, until the planting day. Don't leave it in a car, a hot shed or a garage through June, July, August and September, or it may soften or split before it reaches the ground.

What bio urns and aquamation cost in Van
Bio urns vary more in price than you might expect. A national guide puts biodegradable urns at $70–$260[6], depending on material, size and whether a seed or tree system is included. For a lake or sea release, one water urn designed to float briefly and dissolve sells for $149[7]. In Van, the tree and the soil amendments are usually the cheapest part of the whole memorial.

What Texas allows for ashes, in general terms
Carrying ashes from one place to another is usually simple, but keep the paperwork. The certificate or letter from the crematory shows what's in the container, which helps if you're crossing borders, flying out of Texas or handing the ashes to a cemetery. Keep a copy with the ashes and another somewhere safe at home.
To find your county or city office in Texas, start with the official Texas local government directory.
The rules that apply across Texas (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Texas page. Van may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A simple plan for your pet's eco memorial
- If euthanasia is planned, find out from the practice beforehand which crematory handles their aftercare and whether aquamation is available through them.
- Book the aftercare before the appointment, which leaves the day free for nothing but sitting with your pet.
- Ask for a paw print or nose print ahead of the cremation if you want one; once it's done there's no way to make one.
- Choose the plant in advance when that feels easier. Knowing the exact spot their pet is headed for brings some families real comfort.
- Skip the display urn. A simple box or tube from the crematory is all a planting needs, and the saving can go toward the tree or shrub.
- Prepare the soil blend while you wait for the crematory to return the ashes, and the planting can happen within a few months instead of slipping year after year.
Keeping your pet's memory growing in Van
Some families in Van choose memorials that reflect the town's oil-field and ranching past: a stone carved with a pumpjack or a cattle brand, an urn made from reclaimed barn wood, or a framed photo of the pet on the family land. Others want something plain and quiet. What matters most is that the piece feels like your pet and not like a catalog page.

Questions people ask
Does the Van climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 94°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Van?
Usually yes. Hideaway is about 11 miles away, Mineola is about 13 miles away and Lindale is about 13 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Texas?
For people, yes: about 55.7%[5] of Texas deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Van follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve Van actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Garland, about 64 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Van and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
What happens to the memorial tree if I move away from Van?
It stays with the land, and ashes mixed into soil can't be recovered. If a move is possible, plant in a large container, plant at a relative's home, or keep a small portion of the ashes back for a future garden. Cuttings from many shrubs root easily, so you can take a piece of the plant with you.
Will the seed in a tree urn grow?
Not always. Seeds from kits can fail to sprout if they weren't stored or chilled correctly, and alkaline soil around them makes it harder. A young tree from a nursery near Van is far more reliable, and most planting urns work just as well with a sapling in the top chamber.
