Bio Urns & Eco Memorials in Ireland: what to know
If you're ordering a bio urn from abroad into Ireland, check the biosecurity rules first. Many countries restrict imported seeds, soil and live plants, and an urn packed with a seed capsule can be delayed or destroyed at the border. Ordering the urn without its seed and buying a locally grown sapling sidesteps the problem, and the sapling is more likely to thrive.
Bio urns in Ireland work the same way as anywhere: the ashes go into soil or water in a container designed to break down. What changes from country to country is the climate, the native trees that suit it, whether water cremation for pets is offered, and who you ask before scattering on public land or water. This page covers Ireland as a whole; each city page adds local detail.
We cover 3 communities in Ireland, from Dublin, Cork and Galway.

Cremation habits in Ireland, and what they mean for a bio urn
With about 26.56%[1] of people in Ireland cremated, burial remains the local norm. A bio urn can bridge the gap for families who want the comfort of a grave but prefer cremation for a pet. You bury the urn, the tree marks the place, and the spot can be visited for years. If older relatives are uneasy, it can help to describe it simply as burying the ashes and planting a tree.
We take the Ireland percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
What bio urns and aquamation cost in Ireland
Water cremation is new in Europe. The first facility for people opened in Ireland in 2023[2], and Norway changed its law in 2022 so funeral homes can apply to offer it[3]. For pets, availability near Ireland is limited, so most families use a flame cremation and a biodegradable urn afterwards. Ask local crematoria directly whether they offer it.
In Ireland, one pet crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg and EUR 250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[4]. In Norway, separate cremation runs NOK 3,790 to 4,990 by weight[5]. Prices in Ireland will differ, but the pattern holds: ask for individual cremation and a simple container, then order the biodegradable urn on its own.
| Country | Collective (no ashes back) | Individual (ashes back) |
|---|---|---|
| Germany | €85 to €205[6] | €165 to €375 |
| France (20 kg dog) | €70 to €120[7] | €150 to €250 |
| Netherlands (dog, average) | about €200[8] | about €300 |
| Bio urn | Not needed: no ashes come back | Bought separately, sized for the ashes |

Land, water and permission in Ireland
Carrying ashes from one place to another is usually simple, but keep the paperwork. The certificate or letter from the crematory shows what's in the container, which helps if you're crossing borders, flying out of Ireland or handing the ashes to a cemetery. Keep a copy with the ashes and another somewhere safe at home.
Ireland opened Europe's first water cremation facility for people, in Navan, in 2023[2], and its operator says a water cremation emits about 28 kg of CO2 against about 245 kg for flame cremation[10]. Pet aquamation is still rare, so most Irish families plant ashes from a flame cremation. A mild, damp climate makes Irish soils forgiving for a memorial tree.
From ashes to a growing tree: the steps
- If your pet dies while you're away from Ireland, ask a local vet near where it happened to arrange individual cremation there. Bringing a body home over a long distance is rarely practical.
- Ask how the ashes can reach you: collected in person, posted by a tracked courier service, or sent to your own vet.
- Flying home with the ashes? Keep them in your carry-on, inside a container security can scan, and pack the crematory's paperwork alongside them.
- Don't buy the bio urn on the road. Hold off until you're back and have settled on a location, then choose an urn that suits it.
- Plant somewhere that links both places if you like: a tree from the region where your pet died, or one from your own garden, if it suits the climate in Ireland.
- Write down the date and place of your pet's death and the name of the crematory. Memories of those particulars slip away sooner than most people think.
Ways to mark the spot and the date
Water memorials leave no marker, so the memory needs somewhere else to live. Some families keep a spoonful of ashes in a keepsake, write down the date and the place of the release, or return to the same shore each year with loose flowers. A photo of the water at the moment the urn sank is often the thing people treasure most.

Questions people ask
Is pet aquamation available in Ireland?
In some places, most often in and around larger cities. Pet providers have adopted water cremation faster than human funeral homes, but availability depends on whether a provider near you has the equipment. Ask local pet crematories directly, or tell us your town and we'll check which providers serve it.
How many communities do you cover in Ireland?
We have local living-memorial guides for 3 communities in Ireland, including Dublin, Cork and Galway. Each covers local weather and planting seasons, soil advice, prices for bio urns and aquamation where we have sourced figures, and general notes on scattering and water releases.
Which trees make a good pet memorial in Ireland?
Choose a native tree or shrub that already grows well near you and fits the space in twenty years. Species that tolerate slightly alkaline soil cope best with ashes. A local nursery or extension service can suggest a few, and the tree finder tool on this site sorts options by mature size, light and climate.
Do I need a permit to plant pet ashes in my own garden in Ireland?
Generally not. Ashes don't carry the health concerns that rules for burying a whole body address. Keep plantings away from wells, streams and vegetable beds, check any homeowners' association or tenancy rules, and remember that a tree in the ground stays with the property if you sell.
What if my soil in Ireland is chalky or alkaline?
Ashes will make it more so. Mix them with extra compost or composted bark, choose a lime-tolerant tree or shrub, and test the pH before planting. On very chalky ground, a raised bed or large container with bought-in soil gives you more control.
Where can I get a bio urn in Ireland?
Most bio urns are ordered online and ship across Ireland, and some pet crematories stock a biodegradable option. The more important purchase is local: a young native tree from a nursery that knows your climate. If you tell us where you are, we'll email options for urns, crematories and, where it's offered, water cremation.
