Tree, garden and water memorials in Dublin

Dublin, Leinster

Where a living memorial fits in Dublin

Many Dubliners feel a strong pull to the sea. Dollymount Strand, Sandymount and the cliff paths at Howth are places families often come back to, and some choose a biodegradable urn or a quiet scattering at a spot they loved. Choose a calm day, avoid busy bathing areas, and remember that a scattering is permanent, so you may want to keep a pinch of ashes in a pendant, a small urn or a glass keepsake first.

Irish memorial customs lean toward the personal: a candle lit on an anniversary, a photograph on the mantelpiece, a name spoken at a family meal. Pet memorials in Dublin often follow the same pattern. A framed photo with a collar tag, a small engraved urn, or a piece of jewellery holding a trace of ashes all fit that tradition of keeping someone close without fuss.

In a city the size of Dublin, the question is rarely whether you can find a bio urn. It's where the memorial will live. Many people here rent, share a yard or live several floors up, so the most useful living memorial is often a large container: a dwarf tree or flowering shrub in a half-barrel on a patio or balcony, which comes with you when you move. Garden centers in big metros usually stock a wide range of natives, which makes matching the plant to your climate much easier than ordering a seed from a kit.

With roughly 1,228,000 residents, Dublin is one of the Leinster communities we cover.

Our pages for Galway (116 miles) and Cork (137 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Dublin as well.

Cremation habits in Ireland, and what they mean for a bio urn

With cremation at roughly 26.56%[1] for people in Ireland, a pet's ashes may be the first cremated remains your family has ever handled. It helps to know what to expect: a sealed bag of pale, coarse, sand-like material, heavier than you'd think. Nothing about it is dangerous to touch. Plant it with gloves if you prefer, and mix it well.

Seasons, soil and weather for a memorial in Dublin

If you're planning a water release near Dublin, check the season as well as the rules. Rough water, ice or crowded summer beaches all make a quiet release harder. A calm, early-morning weekday is usually best, and it's worth visiting the spot beforehand so you know where to stand and how to get down to the water safely.

What bio urns and aquamation cost in Dublin

In France, a 20 kg dog costs about €70 to €120 for collective cremation and €150 to €250 for individual[5], while Dutch averages are about €200 and €300[6]. Those prices usually include a basic container. If you'd like a planting urn in Dublin, ask for the ashes in a plain container and buy the bio urn separately, sized for the amount of ash you'll receive.

The Leinster price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Who to ask before you plant or scatter in Leinster

Carrying ashes from one place to another is usually simple, but keep the paperwork. The certificate or letter from the crematory shows what's in the container, which helps if you're crossing borders, flying out of Leinster or handing the ashes to a cemetery. Keep a copy with the ashes and another somewhere safe at home.

For what Dublin itself says, see Dublin City Council Animal Welfare Unit. Its pages cover municipal collection; a private cremation is arranged separately.

Ireland opened Europe's first water cremation facility for people, in Navan, in 2023[8], and its operator says a water cremation emits about 28 kg of CO2 against about 245 kg for flame cremation[9]. Pet aquamation is still rare, so most Irish families plant ashes from a flame cremation. A mild, damp climate makes Irish soils forgiving for a memorial tree.

Planting a memorial in Dublin, step by step

  1. Talk it through with your household before deciding anything, since someone may quietly prefer the ashes to stay indoors.
  2. Measure your space. A tree needs room to grow; a shrub, a pot or a flower bed may suit your garden better.
  3. Test the soil where you plan to plant. If it's already alkaline, choose a lime-tolerant species and add extra compost or composted bark.
  4. Spread the ashes through a wide planting area, never as a single layer under the roots.
  5. Water well for two summers. Most memorial trees that fail do so in their first dry season, not their first winter.
  6. Keep a record of the species, the date and what went into the soil, so you can care for it or move a cutting later.

Remembering your pet in Dublin

In Dublin homes where space is limited, a small wooden or ceramic urn on a shelf is the usual choice after a cremation. Some families prefer a memorial stone for a window box or garden border, or a paw print cast taken before collection. Ask for any print or fur clipping at the first contact, since these must be made before the body leaves your home.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Dublin?

Usually yes. Galway is about 116 miles away and Cork is about 137 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Why does the Dublin page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024) reports about 26.56%[1] of Ireland residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Is it safe to plant a fruit tree with my pet's ashes?

Cremated remains are mostly bone minerals, and once they're thoroughly blended into plenty of compost and garden soil, many gardeners grow fruit trees over them. The high pH and salt are the real concern for the tree, so dilute generously and test the pH. If eating fruit from the memorial feels wrong to anyone in your family, choose an ornamental tree instead.

I rent in Dublin. Can I still have a living memorial?

Yes. Plant in a large container, such as a half-barrel or a big pot with a dwarf tree or flowering shrub, and it moves with you. Use only a small share of the ashes in the pot, well mixed with compost. If you'd like to plant in a rented yard, get the landlord's permission in writing, and remember the tree stays when you leave.

How long can I keep pet ashes before planting them?

As long as you like. Cremated remains don't break down or spoil in a sealed container, so a planting can happen next month, next year or after a move to a house with a garden. What does break down is a biodegradable urn, so keep the ashes in their original container and only transfer them into the bio urn shortly before planting.

Can I scatter my pet's ashes in a park in Dublin?

Usually only with permission, and some parks don't allow it at all. Parks are managed by a city, county, state or national agency, each with its own policy, and many were written for human ashes. Contact the park office, explain it's a small amount of pet ash, and ask whether there's a preferred spot.
