Cremation, burial and green choices in Ireland
Burial still dominates in Ireland, where the human cremation rate is about 26.56%[1], and for many families burying a pet whole feels natural. If you'd like a greener version of that, a shroud or basket made of natural fiber and a tree nearby is one way. If you'd rather cremate, a planting urn gives you a smaller, simpler burial. Either way, check local rules on burying animals before you dig.

Where you can plant or release ashes in Connacht
Natural burial grounds and some pet cemeteries in Connacht accept ashes in biodegradable urns, and a few ask for nothing else: no plastic, no metal, no varnish. If you're considering one, ask what the urn may be made of, whether a tree or marker is allowed above it, and whether the fee includes looking after the plot.
Ireland opened Europe's first water cremation facility for people, in Navan, in 2023[9], and its operator says a water cremation emits about 28 kg of CO2 against about 245 kg for flame cremation[10]. Pet aquamation is still rare, so most Irish families plant ashes from a flame cremation. A mild, damp climate makes Irish soils forgiving for a memorial tree.
How to plan a living memorial, in order
- If euthanasia is planned, find out from the practice beforehand which crematory handles their aftercare and whether aquamation is available through them.
- Book the aftercare before the appointment, which leaves the day free for nothing but sitting with your pet.
- Ask for a paw print or nose print before cremation if you'd like one. It can't be made afterwards.
- Choose the plant in advance when that feels easier. Knowing the exact spot their pet is headed for brings some families real comfort.
- Skip the display urn. The basic tube or box the crematory supplies does the job for planting, and whatever you don't spend can buy a better tree or shrub.
- Prepare the soil blend while you wait for the ashes, so the planting can follow within a season rather than drifting on for years.
Keeping your pet's memory growing in Galway
Ireland still buries most of its dead, with cremation at around a quarter, so keeping ashes at home can feel new to some Galway families. For a pet, many people go ahead anyway and find it comforting: a small urn on the dresser, a framed paw print, or a pendant carrying a pinch of ashes. There is no hurry, and sealed ashes keep safely.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Galway?
Usually yes. Cork is about 98 miles away and Dublin is about 116 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Galway page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024) reports about 26.56%[1] of Ireland residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I plant a tree directly on my pet's ashes in Galway?
It's better not to. Cremated remains have a very high pH, around 11.7[11], and they're high in sodium, so a solid layer of ash under the roots can yellow or kill a young tree. Mix the ashes through plenty of compost and soil across a wider area, test the pH, and plant once it has come down. There's no single mixing ratio that suits every pet and every soil.
How long does a water-soluble urn take to dissolve?
Most are made from salt, sand, paper or gelatin and dissolve within minutes to hours once they sink. Some float briefly first, long enough for a few words: one maker's water urn floats for several minutes before dissolving[12]. Calm water gives the best result, so check the forecast for wind before you go.
Is it legal to release pet ashes in the sea or a river?
Rules differ by place and by who manages the water, and many were written for human remains. In general, avoid drinking-water reservoirs, busy swimming areas and places where anglers gather, use a water-soluble urn or loose ashes only, and let nothing plastic float away. Ask the relevant agency or landowner before the day.
I rent in Galway. Can I still have a living memorial?
Yes. Plant in a large container, such as a half-barrel or a big pot with a dwarf tree or flowering shrub, and it moves with you. Use only a small share of the ashes in the pot, well mixed with compost. If you'd like to plant in a rented yard, get the landlord's permission in writing, and remember the tree stays when you leave.
