Living memorials in Cerritos: the local picture
Cerritos homes tend to have neat front lawns and private backyards, and a garden memorial can blend into either. A flat engraved stone set into a border, a small bronze plaque beside a rose bush or a bio urn planted with a dwarf citrus all suit the mild climate. For anything under the sprinklers, choose stone or bronze rather than wood, which weathers quickly when watered daily.
Plenty of Cerritos families have relatives in Seoul, Manila, Mumbai or Taipei, and sometimes a portion of a pet's ashes travels home with a family member. A small sealed keepsake is much easier to carry than a full urn. Check the airline's rules and the destination country's customs guidance beforehand, and carry a short written note in your bag describing the contents.
In a smaller place like Cerritos, a living memorial often starts with more space than city families have: a larger yard, family land or a farm. That makes a memorial tree in the ground realistic. The services, though, may be further away. Pet water cremation is rarely based in small towns, so if it matters to you, ask your vet whether they work with a provider in a larger centre such as Anaheim, and how the ashes come back.
Cerritos is home to about 46,367 people, the 172nd-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Cerritos are based about 9 miles away in Anaheim, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for Norwalk (3 miles, a larger centre), Lakewood (3 miles) and Bellflower (4 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Cerritos as well.
Our estimate
17,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Cerritos
How we calculated this
46,367 ÷ 2.5 = 18,547 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 17,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,400
Estimated dog and cat losses in Cerritos each year
How we calculated this
17,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,400 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Cremation, burial and green choices in California
About 70.5%[5] of people in California are cremated, so ashes are part of everyday life here in a way they aren't everywhere. Many families have already scattered or planted a grandparent's ashes and know how it felt. If you did, you'll recognise much of the process for a pet, with one difference worth knowing: a pet's ashes are a much smaller amount, which makes mixing them safely into soil far easier.
The California percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Cerritos, not as a count of pets.
Cerritos seasons and your memorial tree
Wet winters are the main hazard for a memorial planting in Cerritos. Around February, heavy soils can stay waterlogged for weeks, and roots sitting in cold, salty water rot easily. If your ground drains slowly, plant on a low mound, raised a little above the surrounding soil, so excess water runs away from the ash blend rather than pooling in it.
In Cerritos, winters are gentle, with December lows around 48°F, and summers are warm rather than scorching. That opens up evergreen choices, such as a native evergreen shrub or a small conifer, which give you a green memorial all year. Whatever you choose, water through the first summer, keep grass away from the base and replace mulch each spring.

Price ranges for planting and water urns
Water cremation prices overlap with flame cremation. One Delaware provider charges $150–$450[6] for private aquamation by weight, including a standard urn, and $50–$225[7] for communal. That makes private about 2.5 times the shared price[8]. Prices in Cerritos depend on who offers it locally, so ask for a written quote that says whether the ashes come back and in what container.
The full price table by product is on our California page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Rules worth knowing in California before you scatter
Rules about ashes were mostly written for people, and pet ashes often sit in a grey area. That's a reason to ask, not a reason to assume. On land you own, planting or burying ashes is generally fine. Anywhere else in California, from parks to beaches to a friend's field, the land manager or owner decides, so ask first.
To find your county or city office in California, start with the official California local government directory.
Start with the California rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Cerritos's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
Planting a memorial in Cerritos, step by step
- If you find your pet has died at home, lift them carefully onto a blanket or towel and lay them in the coolest part of the house, then phone the vet or a nearby pet crematory. Most can either pick them up or point you to a drop-off place.
- Say you want individual cremation and that you plan to plant the ashes. That one sentence steers the provider away from communal options that return nothing.
- Keep the collar, a tag and a little fur while your pet is still with you at home. Later on they can be buried alongside the urn or tucked away in a keepsake box.
- Leave the memorial decisions for another week. Choosing a tree the same night is too much to ask of anyone.
- When the ashes arrive, open the box once to see how much there is and how the inner bag is sealed, then put the lid back and keep it somewhere dry.
- Use our [memorial tree finder](/tools/memorial-tree-finder) when the time feels right, then pencil in the planting for a quiet weekend during the proper season.
Remembering your pet in Cerritos
Cerritos has one of the largest Asian American populations of any city in the region, with Korean, Filipino, Chinese and South Asian families alongside long-time residents, and memorial customs differ from home to home. A photo with fresh flowers, a lacquered or ceramic urn, or a gold pendant holding a pinch of ashes can each fit a family's tradition. Start with what your household already does to remember people.
Every option Cerritos families choose between is on the services page, or compare your instinct with the poll results, try the free planning tools, there are guides for the big decisions and articles for the details. If you live between Cerritos and Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose and Fresno, either page applies. Every other community in California, and all of the United States, is listed too.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Cerritos actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Anaheim, about 9 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Cerritos and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[5]. We show it on the Cerritos page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Cerritos?
Usually yes. Norwalk is about 3 miles away, Lakewood is about 3 miles away and Bellflower is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How does Cerritos's weather affect pet aftercare?
August is the hottest month in Cerritos, with average highs around 85°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
How many families in Cerritos might want a planting memorial?
We don't know the exact number, but the scale is real: by our estimate, around 1,400 dogs and cats die in Cerritos each year. Interest in greener goodbyes is growing too; 61.4%[10] of US consumers say they'd like to explore green funeral options. If you're one of them, you're far from alone.
Can I plant a tree directly on my pet's ashes in Cerritos?
It's better not to. Cremated remains have a very high pH, around 11.7[11], and they're high in sodium, so a solid layer of ash under the roots can yellow or kill a young tree. Mix the ashes through plenty of compost and soil across a wider area, test the pH, and plant once it has come down. There's no single mixing ratio that suits every pet and every soil.
