Living memorials in DeLand: the local picture
West Volusia's fern nurseries and wooded lots give families ideas for living memorials: a bed of native ferns around a small stone, a young live oak or dogwood planted with a biodegradable urn, or a shaded bench where the family can sit. Many households keep most of the ashes indoors and set just a small portion into the garden, so moving house later is easier.
An outdoor memorial in DeLand faces frosty winter mornings, hot summers and heavy storms, sometimes in the same year. Granite and dense natural stone cope well; painted wood, soft sandstone and thin metal do not. Place a marker beneath a tree's canopy, where it is shaded from the harshest sun, on a gravel bed that drains quickly. Check it each spring for tilt or cracks.
Deliveries can take longer to reach a place like DeLand, and bio urns, water urns and mail-order saplings are no exception. Order the urn soon after you decide, rather than the week before the planting. If a nursery nearby carries hardy local trees, buy there instead, and check the root ball: a healthy tree has firm, pale roots that aren't circling tightly in the pot.
DeLand is home to about 46,346 people, the 67th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Orlando, about 34 miles (55 km) away, which is where some providers serving DeLand are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Deltona (9 miles, a larger centre), DeBary (10 miles) and Sanford (16 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
17,000
DeLand: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
46,346 ÷ 2.5 = 18,538 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 17,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,400
Estimated dog and cat losses in DeLand each year
How we calculated this
17,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,400 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Cremation, burial and green choices in Florida
With roughly 72.5%[5] of people in Florida cremated, the local funeral culture leans firmly toward ashes rather than graves. That has a practical upside for a living memorial. Nurseries, crematories and even some parks departments are used to questions about ashes, and you'll usually get a straight answer. It's still worth asking before you plant or scatter anywhere you don't own, because common practice isn't the same as permission.
The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Choosing the right month to plant in DeLand
In a hot climate like DeLand's, with highs of about 91°F in July, salt is a bigger problem than in wetter places. Rain is what washes sodium from ashes down past the roots, and dry heat lets it build up near the surface. Mix the ashes through a much larger volume of soil and compost than you'd think necessary, and water deeply and slowly after planting so salts move down, not up.
Biodegradable urns are made to break down, and heat and humidity can start that early. In DeLand, where July highs average about 91°F, keep a paper, cornstarch or coconut-fiber urn indoors, somewhere cool and dry, until the planting day. Don't leave it in a car, a hot shed or a garage through May, June, July, August and September, or it may soften or split before it reaches the ground.

Adding up the cost of a bio urn memorial in DeLand
The container the ashes come back in can quietly add to the bill. One Virginia crematory, for example, sells private cremation at $189 with a temporary container and $225 with a wooden urn[6]. If you're planting, the plain option is all you need. Wooden pet urns alone run about $30–$150[7] in one national guide, money that could buy a good tree for your DeLand garden instead.

Scattering and planting rules in Florida
Rules change more often than most people realise, and many local policies about ashes were never written down at all. Treat any general guide for Florida, including ours, as a starting point. Whoever looks after that particular field, park or shoreline is the one whose answer counts, so it's worth getting it by email where you can.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in DeLand.
The Florida page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. DeLand's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Planting a memorial in DeLand, step by step
- If your pet dies while you're away from DeLand, have a vet close to where you are set up individual cremation locally. Transporting a body a long way home almost never works out.
- Ask how the ashes can reach you: collected in person, posted by a tracked courier service, or sent to your own vet.
- Flying home with the ashes? Carry them in your hand luggage in a container that can be X-rayed, with the crematory's certificate in the same bag.
- Don't buy the bio urn on the road. Wait until you're home and know the spot, so the urn matches the place.
- Plant somewhere that links both places if the idea appeals: perhaps a species native to the area your pet died in, or one already growing at home, provided it can cope with the climate in DeLand.
- Write down the date and place where your pet died and where it was cremated. Those details fade faster than you'd expect.
Keeping your pet's memory growing in DeLand
DeLand's historic homes and oak-shaded yards lend themselves to classic tributes: an engraved slab beneath a live oak, a wooden urn on the mantel, or a framed portrait in the hall. Students and faculty at Stetson who expect to move after a few years often choose something smaller, such as a keepsake pendant, a mini urn or a paw impression in clay that fits in a suitcase.

Questions people ask
Is DeLand big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 17,000 DeLand households keep a dog or cat and around 1,400 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 46,346), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Why does the DeLand page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[5] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from DeLand?
Usually yes. Deltona is about 9 miles away, DeBary is about 10 miles away and Sanford is about 16 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the DeLand climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How many families in DeLand might want a planting memorial?
We don't know the exact number, but the scale is real: by our estimate, around 1,400 dogs and cats die in DeLand each year. Interest in greener goodbyes is growing too; 61.4%[9] of US consumers say they'd like to explore green funeral options. If you're one of them, you're far from alone.
What if the soil in DeLand is already alkaline?
Then ashes push it further, so be generous with compost and composted bark, choose a lime-tolerant tree or shrub, and test the pH before planting. Chalky and limestone soils are common in many regions. Plants that dislike lime, such as azaleas and blueberries, are a poor choice for an ash planting anywhere.
