Living memorials in Lauderhill: the local picture
Condo and apartment living in Lauderhill leaves little room for large pieces, so families lean toward things that sit on a dresser or can be worn: a carved wooden box, a picture frame with a sealed pocket behind the photo, or a pendant with a speck of ash inside. Families who plan to share the remains can have them divided before they come home.
Some Lauderhill families plant something to remember a pet in a patio pot or a small garden bed: a croton, a hibiscus or a young mango set over a plant-fiber urn that breaks down in the soil. Others choose a small engraved stone for the doorstep, where visitors see the name each time they arrive. Before buying, get the price, size and delivery date confirmed by the seller.
Deliveries can take longer to reach a place like Lauderhill, and bio urns, water urns and mail-order saplings are no exception. Order the urn soon after you decide, rather than the week before the planting. If a nursery nearby carries hardy local trees, buy there instead, and check the root ball: a healthy tree has firm, pale roots that aren't circling tightly in the pot.
With roughly 75,668 residents, Lauderhill is the 41st-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Hialeah, roughly 21 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Lauderhill run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Lauderdale Lakes (2 miles), Sunrise (2 miles) and Plantation (3 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
28,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Lauderhill
How we calculated this
75,668 ÷ 2.5 = 30,267 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 28,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
2,300
Lauderhill families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
28,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,300 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

How Florida feels about cremation
In Florida, about 72.5%[5] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. When most human funerals end with ashes, the question "what shall we do with them?" comes up in nearly every family, and a tree, a garden bed or a lake release is a common answer. That familiarity carries over to pets. It also means more crematories to choose from, and more chance that one of them offers water cremation.
We take the Florida rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Lauderhill, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
What Lauderhill's climate means for a living memorial
In a hot climate like Lauderhill's, with highs of about 91°F in August, salt is a bigger problem than in wetter places. Rain is what washes sodium from ashes down past the roots, and dry heat lets it build up near the surface. Mix the ashes through a much larger volume of soil and compost than you'd think necessary, and water deeply and slowly after planting so salts move down, not up.
Biodegradable urns are made to break down, and heat and humidity can start that early. In Lauderhill, where August highs average about 91°F, keep a paper, cornstarch or coconut-fiber urn indoors, somewhere cool and dry, until the planting day. Don't leave it in a car, a hot shed or a garage through May, June, July, August, September and October, or it may soften or split before it reaches the ground.

What a greener goodbye costs in Lauderhill
The container the ashes come back in can quietly add to the bill. One Virginia crematory, for example, sells private cremation at $189 with a temporary container and $225 with a wooden urn[6]. If you're planting, the plain option is all you need. Wooden pet urns alone run about $30–$150[7] in one national guide, money that could buy a good tree for your Lauderhill garden instead.

Who to ask before you plant or scatter in Florida
Rules about ashes were mostly written for people, and pet ashes often sit in a grey area. That's a reason to ask, not a reason to assume. On land you own, planting or burying ashes is generally fine. Anywhere else in Florida, from parks to beaches to a friend's field, the land manager or owner decides, so ask first.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Florida level first; our Florida rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Lauderhill or your HOA adds anything.
What to do first, and what can wait for the right season
- If euthanasia is planned, find out from the practice beforehand which crematory handles their aftercare and whether aquamation is available through them.
- Book the aftercare before the appointment, so on the day itself you only have to be with your pet.
- Ask for a paw print or nose print ahead of the cremation if you want one; once it's done there's no way to make one.
- Choose the plant in advance when that feels easier. Knowing the exact spot their pet is headed for brings some families real comfort.
- Skip the display urn. The basic tube or box the crematory supplies does the job for planting, and whatever you don't spend can buy a better tree or shrub.
- Prepare the soil blend while you wait for the ashes, so the planting can follow within a season rather than drifting on for years.
Remembering your pet, in Lauderhill and wherever you go next
Lauderhill's cricket ground at Central Broward Park is one of the few international cricket venues in the United States, a sign of how strong island ties are here. Some families let memorials echo home and heritage: an urn in bright island colors, a photo of the pet in the yard, or a small keepsake mailed to relatives in Jamaica or elsewhere in the Caribbean. Allow extra weeks if a piece is shipping abroad.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Lauderhill?
By our estimate, about 28,000 households in Lauderhill have at least one dog or cat, and around 2,300 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 75,668, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Will I have to travel to Hialeah to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Hialeah (roughly 21 miles from Lauderhill) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Lauderhill?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[5]. We show it on the Lauderhill page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How much ash will my pet leave, and will it fit a bio urn?
Cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[9], so a cat returns a few ounces and a large dog several pounds. Many planting kits are designed for a set volume, and a big dog's ashes may not all fit. Use our urn size calculator, and plan to mix any extra into the wider planting bed or keep it for a second memorial.
Is water cremation better for the environment?
It uses much less energy: pet aquamation is claimed to use about 90%[10] less energy than flame cremation, and it uses about as much water as 1–3 pet baths[11] per pet. The strongest carbon figures come from studies of human funerals, not pets, so treat them as a direction rather than a promise. You still get ashes back for a bio urn.
