Tree, garden and water memorials in St. John
By our estimate, around 9,150 households in St. John share their home with a dog or cat, and roughly 760 of those pets die each year. More of those families now ask about planting or water memorials. Here's how to do it well.
- When to plant in your season
- How much ash your urn must hold
- Aquamation providers in your area

Living memorials in St. John: the local picture
Many St. John homes are newer builds in neighborhoods with covenants, and families often prefer a memorial that lives inside: a portrait with an engraved plate, a small chest on a bookcase, or a curio cabinet holding tags and a well-chewed toy. If your HOA permits it, a stone set flush beside the deck can be discreet. Ashes can remain in the provider's container while you decide.
St. John families are often scattered, with grown children living in Chicago, Indianapolis or farther off. Several small keepsake urns, a bracelet that stores a pinch of ash, or a framed paw impression let each person keep something close. Mention paw prints or fur clippings at the very start; the provider can only make them while your pet is still in their care.
In a town the size of St. John, the nearest aquamation provider may be an hour or more away, and pet crematories often serve a wide rural area. That doesn't change what you can do with the ashes. A flame-cremated pet's ashes work just as well in a planting urn or water urn. If a lower-impact goodbye is the main reason you're here, the choice of cremation matters more than the urn, so ask about water cremation before you commit.
St. John is home to about 24,841 people, the 42nd-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Chicago, about 31 miles (50 km) away, which is where some providers serving St. John are based.
St. John sits within easy reach of Schererville (3 miles), Crown Point (7 miles) and Highland (7 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from St. John; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
9,150
How many dog- or cat-owning households St. John has (estimate)
How we calculated this
24,841 ÷ 2.5 = 9,936 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 9,150. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
760
dog and cat deaths per year in St. John, our estimate
How we calculated this
9,150 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 760 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Cremation, burial and green choices in Indiana
In Indiana, with a human cremation rate of roughly 56.5%[5], you'll often find pet cemeteries and pet crematories operating side by side. Some cemeteries now offer small plots for ashes, occasionally with a tree or shrub above them. That's worth comparing with a garden planting at home: a cemetery plot stays put if you move, while your own garden costs nothing and stays private.
The Indiana percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for St. John, not as a count of pets.
What St. John's climate means for a living memorial
Water releases need open water, and in St. John lakes and ponds may ice over around January. Never walk out onto ice to release an urn. If a lake or river was your pet's place, plan the release for spring or summer, when the shoreline is safe and a water-soluble urn can float and dissolve as it's meant to. Keep the ashes at home until then.
Cold winters narrow the choice of tree in St. John, where January lows average about 15°F. Pick species that are fully hardy locally: native trees, or ornamentals a nearby nursery rates for your zone. A tender tree from a warmer region may survive one mild winter and die in the next. Hardy flowering shrubs are a good fallback if you have less space.

What bio urns and aquamation cost in St. John
The container the ashes come back in can quietly add to the bill. One Virginia crematory, for example, sells private cremation at $189 with a temporary container and $225 with a wooden urn[6]. If you're planting, the plain option is all you need. Wooden pet urns alone run about $30–$150[7] in one national guide, money that could buy a good tree for your St. John garden instead.

Rules worth knowing in Indiana before you scatter
Natural burial grounds and some pet cemeteries in Indiana accept ashes in biodegradable urns, and a few ask for nothing else: no plastic, no metal, no varnish. If you're considering one, ask what the urn may be made of, whether a tree or marker is allowed above it, and whether the fee includes looking after the plot.
Indiana keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers St. John.
Start with the Indiana rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat St. John's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
From ashes to a growing tree: the steps
- If the ashes have been on a shelf for years, planting is still an option. Ashes don't degrade with age, so nothing has been missed.
- Open the container carefully indoors or out of any breeze, and look to see if there's a sealed inner bag holding the ashes.
- Weigh or measure what you have, then use our urn size calculator to see which planting urn or water urn fits.
- Decide whether to keep any back. Having lived with the ashes so long, plenty of families choose to plant the bulk and hold on to a small amount.
- Pick a date that carries meaning, perhaps the day they died or the day they were born, and ask the people who loved them to come.
- Treat the old urn kindly afterwards. Many people reuse a wooden or ceramic urn as a plant pot or keepsake box.
Keeping the memorial alive in St. John
South Lake County's snow, wind and repeated freezes wear down anything left outdoors. A granite or bronze marker, seated on a bed of gravel, will stay level and readable through many winters. Keep it clear of spots where the snowblower throws snow or where salt from the driveway washes, and a memorial beside a garden bed will still look good years later.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 31 miles from St. John) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from St. John?
Usually yes. Schererville is about 3 miles away, Crown Point is about 7 miles away and Highland is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How many pet owners live in St. John?
By our estimate, about 9,150 households in St. John have at least one dog or cat, and around 760 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 24,841, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Does the St. John climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How much ash will my pet leave, and will it fit a bio urn?
Cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[9], so a cat returns a few ounces and a large dog several pounds. Many planting kits are designed for a set volume, and a big dog's ashes may not all fit. Use our urn size calculator, and plan to mix any extra into the wider planting bed or keep it for a second memorial.
Is water cremation better for the environment?
It uses much less energy: pet aquamation is claimed to use about 90%[10] less energy than flame cremation, and it uses about as much water as 1–3 pet baths[11] per pet. The strongest carbon figures come from studies of human funerals, not pets, so treat them as a direction rather than a promise. You still get ashes back for a bio urn.
