Living memorials in Parkland: the local picture
Parkland's large lots give many families room for a garden memorial: an engraved stone under a gumbo limbo, a bench by the lake or a butterfly bed. Homeowner association rules may limit what can be placed in front yards, so check first. Indoor options, from urns and keepsake jewelry to framed paw prints, work well too and move easily later.
Heat, humidity and hurricanes batter garden tributes in northwest Broward, where lots are open to the wind off the Everglades. Granite and dense stone hold up; wood, resin and painted metal fade or corrode. Set any marker on a firm, well-drained base, a little above the lawn, and consider where it will go if you ever need to move it before a storm or a sale.
Deliveries can take longer to reach a place like Parkland, and bio urns, water urns and mail-order saplings are no exception. Order the urn soon after you decide, rather than the week before the planting. If a nursery nearby carries hardy local trees, buy there instead, and check the root ball: a healthy tree has firm, pale roots that aren't circling tightly in the pot.
About 39,186 people live in Parkland, which makes it the 79th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Hialeah, about 32 miles (52 km) away, which is where some providers serving Parkland are based.
For a second opinion on price, Coral Springs (4 miles, a larger centre), Coconut Creek (5 miles) and Margate (6 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Parkland routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
14,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Parkland
How we calculated this
39,186 ÷ 2.5 = 15,674 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 14,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,200
dog and cat deaths per year in Parkland, our estimate
How we calculated this
14,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,200 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Cremation habits in Florida, and what they mean for a bio urn
About 72.5%[5] of people in Florida are cremated, so ashes are part of everyday life here in a way they aren't everywhere. Many families have already scattered or planted a grandparent's ashes and know how it felt. If you did, you'll recognise much of the process for a pet, with one difference worth knowing: a pet's ashes are a much smaller amount, which makes mixing them safely into soil far easier.
That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Parkland only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Weather, soil and planting windows in Parkland
In Parkland's heat, containers dry out fast. If you're planting a memorial in a pot on a patio or balcony, choose a large, light-colored container, which heats up less than a small dark one, and place it where it gets afternoon shade in May, June, July, August, September and October. Use only a small share of the ashes in the pot, water until it drains freely so salts flush out, and check the soil every day in the hottest weeks.
Biodegradable urns are made to break down, and heat and humidity can start that early. In Parkland, where August highs average about 91°F, keep a paper, cornstarch or coconut-fiber urn indoors, somewhere cool and dry, until the planting day. Don't leave it in a car, a hot shed or a garage through May, June, July, August, September and October, or it may soften or split before it reaches the ground.

Price ranges for planting and water urns
Here's how the pieces add up for a Parkland family. Private cremation of a dog averages about $260[6] nationally. A pet bio urn with a seed capsule is sold for about $99[7], and a planting system without the tree for $119[8]. Compost, pine bark and a pH kit add a few dollars more. Ask local providers for a written total before you choose.

Where you can plant or release ashes in Florida
Rules change more often than most people realise, and many local policies about ashes were never written down at all. Treat any general guide for Florida, including ours, as a starting point. Whoever looks after that particular field, park or shoreline is the one whose answer counts, so it's worth getting it by email where you can.

For Florida's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Florida guide. Local rules in Parkland can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do first, and what can wait for the right season
- Confirm the ashes will come back. Communal cremation usually means no ashes are returned, and you can't plant what you don't receive.
- Pick the type of bio urn: one that grows a tree, a simple biodegradable urn to bury in a quiet bed, or a floating urn meant for a lake, river or the coast.
- Ask permission from the landowner, landlord or park manager for anywhere that isn't yours.
- Plan for the weather. Around Parkland, skip days when the soil is rock-hard, frozen or sodden, and wait for still, gentle conditions to plant or release.
- Release gently on water. Set the urn on the surface, let it float and sink on its own, and add only loose petals.
- Come back in a year. Replace mulch, check the tree's growth and take a photo to mark the anniversary.
Keeping the memorial alive in Parkland
Some Parkland families plant a native tree or sabal palm with a scoop of ashes buried in a plant-based urn at its base, creating a living memorial. Others commission a painted portrait from a photo, or a horseshoe or collar mounted in a shadow box. Commissioned work often needs a month or more, so confirm the timeline before you order.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Parkland?
Usually yes. Coral Springs is about 4 miles away, Coconut Creek is about 5 miles away and Margate is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is Parkland big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 14,500 Parkland households keep a dog or cat and around 1,200 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 39,186), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Why does the Parkland page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[5] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Does the Parkland climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How do I prepare pet ashes for planting?
Spread the ashes through a large volume of compost and soil rather than pouring them into the hole in one layer. Many gardeners add acidic material such as composted pine bark or leaf mould. One gardening guide suggests letting the mix rest for 90–120 days[10] before planting. A garden-center pH kit tells you when the mix is ready.
How many dogs and cats are there in Parkland?
By our estimate, about 14,500 households in Parkland have a dog or a cat, and around 1,200 of those pets die each year. We calculate this from the city's population, average household size and national pet ownership and lifespan figures. The method is shown on this page, and the real number of animals is higher.
